Wacom Cintiq 21UX
An interesting pen display
The Wacom Cintiq 21UX is a much-needed improvement from the original model launched 5 years ago and it includes a lot of very welcome upgrades. From what we’ve read in the product list, this device incorporates Wacom’s most advanced pen technology ever in a sleek design, making the Cintiq 21UX the best option when it comes to helping animators, photographers and other creative people bring to life their ideas. And the price is lower than the original model. The gadget ranked as Editors’ Choice on pcmag.com. Let’s see what we have to say about it.
The Wacom Cintiq 21UX, as stated above, saw many enhancements when put near the original Cintiq; these enhancements included the design. First of all, opening the box this product ships with we saw the main display, a stand, a small weighted pen stand and a Grip Pen (this one includes a silicone rubber grip and sports various nibs); the gadget also comes with a cable, manuals, an AC power adapter, 4 rotation lock screws, one installation CD and several other useful things. On the back of the Cintiq 21UX sits a wiring setup which branches into a USB port, separate power and video connectors. We noticed that this meant difficulty when placing the screen on a table while setting up the stand. If you’re into Wacom Brushes 3.0, Corel Painter Sketch Pad and Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0, then you’re in luck, because the the Cintiq includes them all. Let’s now see the measurements and weight: 16.5″ x 22.1″ x 1.8″ and 10kg.
Medium quality display
During our testing, we could easily leave the display loose and thus be able to rotate it while working on various tasks; the display angle could be adjusted with the help of 2 smooth-motion cantilevers on either side of the Cintiq 2UX.
And, since we mentioned the display, we’ll tell you that it is 21.3″ and that it is made of glass and plastic; the active pen area it offers is 17″ x 12.75″. the screen boasts 200 cd/m2 of brightness, support for 16.7 million colors, 0.27 pixel pitch and, last but not least, 550:1 contrast ratio. These being said, though, the display wasn’t as bright as others and the viewing angles were pretty narrow, so that it appeared dim when looking at it from a distance. On either side there are placed 16 Express buttons which feature shortcuts to common tasks; for easy fingertip access there’s a Touch Strips option on the back and this positioning is meant to keep them from being brushed with the user’s hand by accident.
Windows and Mac compatible
Pressure sensitivity, as our tests performed for this review showed, was much improved and there was a pressure-sensitive eraser and 2 programmable keys too.
In order to get the most out of the device, your computer needs to have Windows Vista, 7 or XP SP2, Mac (running OS X 10.4.8 or later), a CD or DVD drive, a VGA or DVI connection and a USB port. Setup went smoothly.
The Cintiq 21UX lso works as a touch display, therefore you won’t need an external mouse, only a pen. Sadly there was no multi-touch support. What we loved most about the device was whenever we drew on the surface, since everything worked flawlessly. Using the pen on the display felt as if we were drawing on real paper.
After the test performed for this review we can conclude that the Wacom Cintiq 21UX is, therefore, a good option for people who don’t have enough money for something bigger and with more features. The product works very well in tight spaces and is very comfortable to use.
