A new thin LED TV from Vizio
There’s a new Vizio TV in town. It goes by the name VIZIO M420NV and its manufacturers lure us into buying it with words like “With only a 1.15″ thin profile, the M420NV 42″ RazorLED LCD HDTV offers razor sharp clarity with 1080p full high definition resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, delivering sharp, blur free images. This stylish LED backlit LCD HDTV has an aesthetic that captures that hip, cool factor like none other.” Is this all true? We tested the device and here is what we have to say about it.
120Hz refresh rate frequency
The latest VIZIO M420NV is one of the best-looking TVs around these days. The body comes with round edges and a sleek black bezel. It has the following weight and measurements: 16.51kg and 99″ x 43.9″ x 24.9″. The profile is only 1.15″ thin. These combine to make the device one of the slimmest and lightest around. The front boasts a 42″ LED Edge Lit Razor Backlit LCD screen which comes with the following specs: full 1080p High Definition Resolution, 100.000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 120Hz refresh rate. While the latter provided, during our test for this review, blur free images and sharpness with the help of a technology called Smooth Motion Video, the dynamic contrast ratio was enough, when we tested the TV, for producing, through dimensions and contrast, brighter whites – 450 nits brightness – along with good black levels; the latter were improved when compared to those on the device’s predecessors.
1080p Full HD resolution
Furthermore, this spec provided beautiful and vibrant colors which radiated off the screen and offered great viewing experience. The 1080p Full HD resolution provided over 2 million pixels, which translated into crystal clear images full of sharp details.
Like all Vizio TVs, this new model also sports a digital ambient light sensor. This option did a great job of controlling fluctuations in the brightness and auto-adjust it so that the product obtained the best picture. What we didn’t like was the remote control: it was slippery and its batteries die much too quickly.
In terms of viewing angle, the new M420NV comes with a 178/178 Degree Horizontal/Vertical Viewing Angle. We had no problem watching the screen from various positions.
Good sound quality
When it comes to sound quality, the TV we’re reviewing today sips with SRS TruSurround, TruVolume and a pair of speakers with 20 Watts of total output power. Despite all these, the device didn’t perform that well; we had to buy separate speakers to be able to enjoy a movie or a game in the best of conditions. When talking about connectivity, the product boasts 4 HDMI, 1 computer output, 1 Composite, 1 component plus stereo audio and many more. We also had the possibility to connect this TV to our PC and use it as a monitor whenever we wanted to view photos or browse the Internet.
Accurate colors provided
And now let’s see how the VIZIO M420NV did in the overall performance part. We were very pleased to see that colors were accurate, edges were superbly sharp and both contrast and details were excellent. Broadcast programs looked almost 3D and playing games was a great experience.
People wanting to protect the environment and their pockets will love the fact that the device exceeds the current ENERGY STAR 4.0 Guidelines by 30% when the TV is turned on and that it consumes 51% less energy than its predecessors. Moreover, the display’s backlight doesn’t use mercury.
The product comes with 1-year warranty for labor and parts.
To sum it up, the VIZIO M420NV is a TV that offers great performance – except in the sound department – and an affordable price.
