Toshiba Thrive 10.1-Inch review
A tablet PC from Toshiba: Thrive
More and more tablets are starting to appear on the market, and the Toshiba Thrive is one of them. This product became available for pre-order last month and those who bought one praised its ease of use, the fact that you can browse the Internet, check your e-mail, work with documents and much more. We invite you to read our review and see how the testing of this device went.
1280 x 800 resolution
When it comes to design, the Toshiba Thrive tablet looks great. The 10.1-inch LED-backlit capacitive multi-touch display has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and 16:10 aspect ratio; these provided very clear, bright and sharp images, with beautiful colors. Furthermore, the Adaptive Display technology and the Resolution+ video enhancement technology automatically adjusted the brightness of the display when the lighting conditions in the room changed. Also, the product came with an IPS-like wide-angle viewing capability, meaning that every time there was bright indoor light, we could still watch the screen without any problems.
A little bit heavier
When compared to other tablets, Toshiba Thrive is slightly heavier, because it weighs 725 g; this might represent a serious con for customers who want a really light tablet. The device runs on Nvidia’s Tegra 2 dual-core mobile processor that comes with 1 GHz of power and GeForce graphics; the two made scrolling from screen to screen a fast and smooth operation. Moreover, this product is one of the first to feature Android Honeycomb 3.1.
Accelerometer and Gyroscope technologies
On the right and the left side sit the stereo speakers and on the front you’ll find a 2-megapixel camera, integrated Accelerometer, Gyroscope and the GPS option. When touching the back of the product you’ll notice it has a rubbery feel to it; this is meant to protect the device against scratches and the like and to offer easy of grip to users. When we wanted to change the battery, we simply removed the backplate and very easily took it out. The color it comes in is black, but if you don’t like it, you can choose another color for an extra sum of money; The back also comes with a second camera, this time a 5-megapixel one.
Excellent sound quality
In the test time the device’s audio performance, the two SRS Premium Voice Suite stereo speakers combined with the built-in audio-enhancing software and headphone jack offered excellent sound. With the preloaded Toshiba Media Player we were able to organize our music collection quickly and easily.
The Thrive PC tablet comes with many ports and slots; this fact made sharing and transferring different files from this tablet to other devices and even other tablets a quick and easy operation, thanks to the integrated USB 2.0, HDMI and mini USB, as well as the SD card reader. Our tests showed that the USB port recognized almost all USB devices.
On the downside, this tablet doesn’t feature a 3G option, but it does come with built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. The integrated File Manager connected our product to any printer that used the same Wi-Fi connectivity as our Toshiba Thrive.
Other advantages of the Thrive PC tablet: its preloaded Swype user interface and replaceable battery. The former feature enabled us to type words by simply moving our finger repeatedly over a key pad on the screen.
The review conclusion is that if you decide to buy an easy to use tablet and you don’t have generous pockets, the Toshiba Thrive represents the ideal choice.
