Toshiba Satellite L745D-S4220

Just another 14 inch notebook

If you’re not afraid to spend a load of money on laptops, then you’ll be able to buy the new Satellite L745D-S4220 launched by Toshiba without breaking a sweat, although the processor and battery leave a lot to be desired. Even the 500GB hard drive doesn’t save the day. Our tests showed that this laptop doesn’t have the same excellent specs as those found on cheaper devices, even those made by Toshiba, and that overall the Satellite L745D-S4220 isn’t such a good deal. Below is our full review.

Glossy design

Starting this off, here’s what we have to say on the matter of design. This laptop comes in the form of a glossy white body with the same glossy white lid and interior. It looks somewhat like a MacBook, but puffier. Its thickness, 1.5″, makes it quite obese when compared to other laptops in its price range. The 2.31kg (including an AC adapter) don’t make it difficult to hold and move from room to room.
The Toshiba Satellite L745D-S4220 was, when we tested it, equipped with a wide keyboard which made typing an OK experience, but unlike the comfortable one offered by the one on other Satellite models; the buttons on it were flat, not raised. The touchpad had a textured patch and sat on a glossy palm rest; we didn’t like how small it was.Toshiba-Satellite-L745D-S4220

Weak resolution

If you’re hoping the display of L745D-S4220 is any good, you’re wrong; its 14″ with 1.366 x 768 pixels and 16:9 aspect ratio didn’t deliver the expected crispness and brightness offered by other Toshiba laptops. On the other hand, if all you want from a device such as this is to watch online movies or DVDs, then you won’t mind what we’ve written earlier.
The webcam with its 1.280 x 1.084 pixels helps somewhat the reputation of Toshiba’s products. During our testing, the quality of images was good, althugh videos didn’t record that smoothly; to achieve that we had to turn the resolution down to 640 x 480 pixels. The stereo speakers were very soft and even with turning the volume way up we didn’t succeed in hearing things well.

1.6GHz AMD E-350 processor

Manufacturers put a 1.6GHz AMD E-350 processor on this Toshiba Satellite L745D-S4220; they should have considered another, because this one is really slow for the high price the laptop has. We had problems when installing different files, opening programs and the like. To make matters worse, the fan was extremely noisy.
The 3 USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, Ethernet, VGA, 802.11n Wi-Fi and SD card reader weren’t enough to satisfy our needs; we expected Bluetooth, USB 3.0 and many more.

Medium battery life

The 4GB of RAM and the 500GB hard drive should have been much more or even upgradeable to 8GB or so. The Intel graphics didn’t mean we could play complex games; just basic ones like Bejeweled. In terms of operating system, the laptop we’re reviewing uses Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit).
Another big disappointment were the 3 hours of battery life. Smaller laptops than this one and with the same processor can last over 5 hours. The 1-year warranty on labor and parts is the standard one.

Review conclusion

As a review conclusion, the Toshiba Satellite L745D-S4220 is an overpriced and underpowered product. You should definitely try another one.
