Toshiba Satellite C850/02D
Toshiba is and always will be one of the most influential names in the history of laptops. And of every other product in-between. When we received the news that this manufacturer released a new model, we seized the opportunity and tested their AU$899 Satellite C850/02D offering. We came with high expectations, but in the end we got less than what we would have liked to see. The review that follows will tell you why.
Powered by Intel Core 2.5GHz i5 CPU
Toshiba’s Satellite C850/02D has both pros and cons. But before delving into them, we will stop at its specs. While performing our standard tests, we came across a 15.6″ display. The resolution that it showed us was 1,366 x 768 pixels. Moving even further, we found an Intel Core 2.5GHz i5 2450M processor, an AMD Radeon HD 7610M graphics unit, a 500GB mechanical hard drive and 4GB of RAM.
The new C850/02D laptop made by Toshiba does not adopt the same tactic as its rivals when it comes to connectivity. This model offers the following in this area: one VGA out, a DVD±RW drive, 1 USB 3.0 port, one HDMI, 2 USB 2.0 ports, 2.4GHz 802.11n, 1 headphone and 1 microphone jacks, 100Mbps Ethernet and Bluetooth. The company has a bad reputation when it comes to port labels. Why? Because they place the latter under their devices. Which has proved to be silly, since you cannot really read them that well. And yet, the company does this with this model. Here, Toshiba did not color them in different hues. Instead, the team there decided to etch them. A tip: the USB 3.0 ports are the blue-colored ones.
Spotting this device in a sea of others like it, it will immediately stand out. At least that was how we responded to its retro looks. Which we personally liked a lot. The one thing that struck us the most from an aesthetic point of view was the touchpad: it was textured, of all things. But it’s not something to be considered a con, so we let that be when we noticed it. Internally, the surface is of the kind that is made to resist fingerprints. On the outside, this model has a glossy finish.
Some keyboard problems
When we tried writing this review on the product’s keyboard, the latter worked well when it came to speed and also accuracy. But its buttons failed to offer excellent responses. Which buttons, might we add, were inverted – and we mean the function keys, not every single button . That will most probably bug some of you who are not accustomed to such a change. The touch pad, on the other hand, was our favorite. It sported 2 physical keys located under the pad and they were both separate. This fact sat very well with us, because we are honestly tired with the touch pads we have seen before.
Try another laptop if you want to use this model as a gaming device. It will fall short of your expectations if you want to use it for such a purpose. Its graphics unit may be the best solution for the type of pixels, however it is not suited for complex game titles. Also, the sound delivered by the pre-installed speakers does not work well with our ears. They needed headphones the majority of time spent with the Satellite C850/02D.
The battery is going to last for around 2 hours and a half.
The Toshiba Satellite C850/02D is a laptop with a pretty good performance. The screen is capable of showing content in a very watchable way and the design is good.
