Toshiba Portege R835-P70
A powerful and affordable laptop
Rumor has it that the recently launched Toshiba Portege R835-P70 is, in more ways than one, among the best laptops buyers can find this year on the market. Since we are very picky when it comes to such products, we don’t believe each and every rumor. Instead, we prefer to test devices and see whether they are effective or not. And so we took the Portege R835-P70 for a spin and came to the following conclusion.
Throwing an eye on this gadget won’t leave you cold, because Toshiba’s newest addition is certainly quite a looker. We loved the R835-P70 chassis made of brushed-metal magnesium alloy with a dark blue tint to it; even though it weighed 1.45kg (without the AC adapter), the laptop we tested a couple of days ago was actually solid and didn’t get scratches as easily as others. Its width and depth are as follows: 12.4″ x 8.9″. Some of you might not like the device’s chromed screen hinges; we enjoyed them and didn’t feel like they looked cheap.
LED powered display
The screen of the Toshiba Portege R835-P70 measures 13.3″ and is a LED one. The resolution it offered was 1.366 x 768 pixels; they managed to deliver good brightness, but not that great viewing angles. some words about the keyboard and touchpad; if you haven’t grown tired of it, we’ll once again say that the former of the two mentioned earlier comes in the standard island-shape and its buttons are well-spaced, so typing felt comfortable; the touchpad was, thankfully, large. We would have liked the keyboard to be backlit. During our test for this review, the vertical row of Page Up, Page Down, End and Home options of R835-P70 were easy to find with the fingers, but it meant that the Right Shift and Enter buttons were harder to locate.
Intel Core i5-2410M processor
The processor this product runs on is a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5-2410M. It offered good speed for multitasking, game playing, video playback and so on. Add to that the 640GB with 5.400rpm and 4GB of RAM and you’ll get good overall performance. Of course there are laptops who deliver superior quality when it comes to processor, storage and internal memory, but the Portege R835-P70 is a good choice in its own way. As for operating system, the gadget has Windows 7 Home Premium (the 64-bit version) installed. The Intel HD 3000 graphics didn’t offer impressive gaming opportunities, especially when we tried playing newer games; Street Fighter IV, for example, ran at a speed of 27fps at 1.366 x 768 pixels, when compared to 63.9fps (at the same resolution) provided by an older game.
Very good battery life
In the connectivity area, the latest Toshiba laptop didn’t sport Bluetooth or mobile broadband. There are, though, eSATA ports, USB 3.0, a built-in DVD drive and others. The pair of stereo speakers did well in the sound department, as did the integrated webcam and microphone.
The battery was amazing; it offered the laptop we’re reviewing today 7 hours on a charge. The warranty is made of 1 year for both labor and parts. There’s even customer support via telephone and an Internet page where you can find driver downloads and other useful documents.
Here is where we end our review. The Toshiba Portege R835-P70 delivers lightness, superb battery and affordable price all in one good-looking device.
