Toshiba Portege R835-P56x
A new 13.3 inch notebook
Trying to find a new laptop to buy is one of the hardest things. That’s because there is a wide variety of very good and affordable ones to choose from. The team behind the successful Toshiba has brought a new laptop onto this world. Its name: Toshiba Portege R835-P56x. The company produces electronics that deliver superb quality and interesting features. Does their latest laptop offer the same superior standards? We took it for a spin at our workplace and invite you to read our following review to decide for yourself whether to buy it or not.
720p TruBrite LED-Backlit
As with other Toshiba laptops, this new model is plenty attractive design-wise. It greatly resembles the R700 model: the body is made of the same alloy chassis with a subtle dark blue tint and ultra durable honeycomb reinforcement; the overall design is both lightweight and thin with its 12.4″ x 8.9″ x 1″ and 1.45kg. We could, during the test for our review, carry it around with us wherever we had to go. The color the R835-P56x laptop comes in is dark-grey. The product sports a 13.3″ widescreen HD TruBrite LED-Backlit display which features the following: 1366 x 768 resolution, 720p native high-definition resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio. The TruBrite technology offered vividness and brightness due to its anti-glare feature.
4GB DDR3 RAM
When we tested the Portege R835-P56x notebook, we loved the fact that the keyboard offered protection against spills and that the laptop sported an advanced AirFlow cooling system. The touchpad felt smooth to the touch; it is made to offer users comfort when typing and also to give the laptop a more streamlined look.
In terms of memory and hard drive, the new Toshiba Portege R835-P56x boasts 4GB of installed DDR3 RAM (1333 MHz, can be extended to 16 GB) and 640 GB SATA hard drive with 5400rpm. Combined, these specs enhance the device’s performance and provide it with great storage space for your daily needs.
Core i5-2410M “Sandy Bridge” CPU
In the processor department, Toshiba’s latest laptop entry uses a 2.30 GHz Intel Core i5-2410M “Sandy Bridge” dual-core processor with 3 MB L3 cache and 2.90 GHz with Turbo Boost Technology. The device’s manufacturers have installed an Intel HD Graphics with 64MB and 1696MB dynamically allocated shared graphic memory.
As for operating system, the Toshiba Portege R835-P56x runs on Windows 7 Home Premium (the 64-bit version) and is preinstalled with Office Starter 2010. The operating system made it very easy to create a home network and share all of our videos, photos and music. The laptop also comes with an 8x SuperMulti DVD drive with double layer support and Labelflash printing; the latter gave us the possibility to personalize our discs and then keep them organized using direct-to-disc laser printing.
Intel Wireless Display technology
In the connectivity department, the latest laptop launched by Toshiba sports the following: HDMI high-definition audio/video output, 1 USB 3.0 port (very good for ultra-fast data transfer), VGA video output, 2 USB 2.0 ports with 1 eSATA/USB combo port, Multi-format memory card reader, Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000) and Microphone input port (plus headphone output jack). The product also boasts Intel Wireless Display technology; this feature translated into fewer annoying wires in our lab. Furthermore, there are built-in Wireless-N Wi-Fi networking capabilities which offer twice the wireless range and five times the performance; it’s compatible with 802.11b/g networks.
Very good battery life
The integrated webcam along with software called Toshiba Face Recognition and the pair of stereo speakers all did a good job.
And now for some preloaded software: Toshiba Bulletin Board, Toshiba Media Controller and Toshiba ReelTime. Some of the preinstalled utilities are as follows: Hard Drive Impact Sensor, Toshiba eco Utility and, lastly, USB Sleep and Charge.
As for battery life: the 6-cell battery offers up to 9 hours on a single charge. For those concerned about the environment, the laptop we’re reviewing today is RoHS compliant, Energy Star 5.0 certified and has Gold EPEAT designation.
After the test performed we can conclude that the new Toshiba Portege R835-P56x notebook is a good choice for a 13.3 inch laptop.
