A 32 inch LED TV at a good price
If you are looking for a smaller TV set that also comes in with good features, the choice is of course varied but very tricky. Most TVs in this category either lack some important features you’d need, either are too expensive, either their price is so affordable that it becomes suspicious. And then you find yourself bewildered by the difficulty of making a good choice. Our review model is Toshiba’s 32SL415U, a 32 inch LED HD TV which despite it’s size comes equipped with almost all that you need, including connectivity ports, image quality and internet, but it’s price is rather high and would force you to make a compromise. A bigger TV but with some main features lacking, or this 32 inch one, with all you need? Let’s see what it can do.
First of all, we found its bezel to be rather large for our tastes, but it doesn’t necessarily bring harm to the design. It keeps a chromed tint on both left and right edges and on the bottom there’s the Toshiba logo, infrared sensor plus the power light. There are no visible buttons, as they are hidden behind the left side bezel. They include Power button, Volume+/-, Channel +/-, Menu and Input. As we mentioned, we cannot complain about the 32SL415U’s connectivity. The ports are split between the rear and the left side, behind the bezel, which is not very convenient if you want to mount the TV on the wall, but at least they are sufficient. On the left side there are one HDMI and two USB ports, while on the rear you’ll find three more HDMI ports, PC and Ethernet ports, a 3.5mm audio input, optical and component video input.
Just 720p resolution
The HDMI ports will allow you to connect the high-definition sources you want, like a Blu-ray player, a game console or other of this kind. The 32inch LCD TV also features built-in WiFi, rarely found with TVs of this size and we appreciate the effort. Therefore, with this wireless connection you also get support for internet services like YouTube, Netflix, Pandora and other multimedia or Web apps you want. The small drawbacks in this section are the lack of support for 3D, the small 60Hz refresh rate and the maximum 720p resolution, but you have to bare in mind that it is still a 32 inch TV, so it cannot have them all. The small light sensor we mentioned in the beginning of the review is there to scan the brightness of the room and with the help of the smart dimming feature it adjusts the screen to the given conditions.
What we tested first on the Toshiba 32SL415U were the black and white levels, which showed to be very good. The TV is capable of delivering very low black levels and impressive brightness and we must admit we didn’t expect this to happen with a TV of this size. We noticed though that these levels weren’t the same for off-axis viewing and this often happens with LED TVs, so be aware of where you sit if you want the best of the picture quality. The 32SL415U did well with fast moving pictures as well and we saw very little blur with rapid actions.
The power consuming figures we looked at by the end of our tests showed that our review model is somewhere in between, not too consuming but not very energy efficient either. The average was somewhere over 55 watts, consuming more with bright images and less with the dark ones.
To sum up, the LED LCD HD Toshiba 32SL415U is very well equipped and delivers very good image quality for its size, but the price is a bit higher that you’d expect. You would spend more on it, but at least you get built-in WiFi, the whole range of necessary connections and an impressive image quality.
