Sony SGPT111US/S

A powerful Android tablet

Reading Sony’s description of its new SGPT111US/S makes one want to jump in the next train or car and go to the nearest store to buy it. Why: because it sounds too good to be true, at least after reading these lines: “Delivering the perfect combination of hardware, rich network services, and seamless usability, the Sony Tablet S offers a high-quality, engaging entertainment experience for your on-the-go lifestyle. It’s all the great things you know from Sony–now in a tablet.” Hungry to get a hands-on experience, we ordered the device and ran it through several tests performed for this review. Here are our finds.

Ergonomic external body

Nowadays tablets are all made to be easy to carry with you to work or wherever you need to go. The Sony SGPT111US/S is just one of them: during our test we could carry the very comfortable product for long periods of time with ease thanks to its design; the latter translated into an ergonomic body which fit our hands perfectly due to a unique form factor which shifted the tablet’s weight closer to our palms. This way it felt extremely light when we watched a movie or read a book we loved. The typing test also showed favorable results because of the natural angle the device offered when we placed it on a table; browsing the Internet meant the same delightful experience.Sony-SGPT111US-S

9.4″ LED TruBlack display

The display featured on the Sony SGPT111US/S is a 9.4″ LED TruBlack one with backlight and multi-touch possibilities. The resolution – 1280 x 800 pixels – delivered lots of deep blacks and vibrant colors which seemed to shine through when we looked at the screen for our review. The touchscreen responded very well to our touches and it was and felt fluid. As for keyboard: the SGPT111US/S comes with a virtual one and its buttons are large; they also take advantage of the display’s possibilities and automatically adjust to whatever task you are performing at a given time. There’s a numeric keypad, too; this one came to life when we introduced word suggestions or passwords. In fewer words: texting and writing e-mails are easier than they ever were on a tablet.
If you don’t like the thought of owning too many remote controls or keep forgetting where you put one or another, the Sony Tablet S features an integrated universal remote to control Sony devices as well as others made by various brands. With it we were able to do different other things, such as view, transfer or share photos we took or music we like to our close ones.

NVIDIA Tegra 2 and Honeycomb 3.1

The dual-core 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and Android Honeycomb version 3.1 made for easy and fast multitasking during our testing of the tablet. The 16GB and the up to 32GB in size memory card were more than enough for our needs. Web pages loaded quickly.
The SGPT111US/S tablet offers great applications in way of entertainment, so that you won’t ever feel bored when using it, since the tablet ships with access to the Android Market and instant access to Google mobile services so that the user can personalize the device.
The 2 cameras sitting on the front, respectively the back snapped pictures whose quality in general was good. The battery life was medium, compared with other similar tablets.
In terms of ports and inputs there are 1 headphone and 1 microUSB. There’s also Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.

Review conclusion

To bring the review to a close, we’ll say that the Sony SGPT111US/S is a good way to spend your money on.
