Sony PS Vita preview
A new gaming platform ready to go
Mobile gaming is developing more and more as time passes. There’s a wide variety of possibilities for gaming fanatics to choose from. This year especially is seeing an increase of such devices. Android, iPhone, Nintendo and Sony PlayStation are some of the big names which have taken the market and stores by storm. The gadget we’ll be talking about in the next paragraphs is called Sony PS Vita. Let’s see what we noticed during the preview phase. After the launch of this platform we will be back with a test and review for this mobile gadget.
The release date ?
This new device is formerly known as Sony NGP and representatives at Sony say that the release date when it will be launched is before the end of 2011, so you’ll have to wait a bit more to buy it and start using it. Also, the price tag won’t be so high: €300 (for the 3G and Wi-Fi version) and €250 (for the Wi-Fi-only model).
In the design department, the Sony PS Vita will be somewhat larger than other gaming consoles, so prepare your hands for those 182mm x 84mm x 19mm it will ship with; but on the other hand it will be a slim device, so there. If we look at specifications, this product won’t really fit in any pocket save handbags, rucksacks and others along this line.
ARM Cortex-A9 processor
The processor used will be a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9. As for graphics, there will be an SGX543MP4+ unit to handle things.
The Sony PS Vita features on the front 2 analogue sticks; we guess it will be like using a controller for one of the current-generation home consoles. The rear features a touch-sensitive surface which will offer another way of controlling games by just pocking it with your fingers during gaming. This part will be the most attractive thing to future buyers, even the product was still not tested by our review team.
And now some words – or more – on the display of the Play Station Vita. The device sports a 5″ OLED touchscreen; its resolution: 960×544 pixels. They will be enough, we think, to assure good colors, contrast, details and so on. Brightness, though, might be a bit of an issue. Another problem will be the sheer size of the display, because, when looking at other gaming consoles, their screens have normal sizes; the one on this gadget might just be too much for the battery, which will end its life rather quickly. One solution against that would be to dim the display, of course; but that would mean that the gaming experience won’t be as impressive as desired. Manufacturers will have to find a way to solve this once they start receiving complaints from users.
3G and Wi-Fi connectivity
Continuing with our preview, the new Sony PS Vita will have 2 cameras: one on the back and one on the front. And, according to manufacturers, it will also feature some built-in applications; one of them is called Near and it allows users to catch a glimpse of which Vita games people around them have played. A second app bears the name Party; this one comes with chat possibilities.
Sony’s latest gaming gadget will boast both 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. So the user will be able to surf the Internet and do other stuff even when there’s no Wi-Fi hotspot close-by.
The battery life ?
It isn’t yet known if 3G will come free of charge or if all you’ll be allowed to do will be to only use the World Wide Web. Fortunately those behind the Japanese company have thought of providing access to a version of PlayStation Suite online games store for Android. The battery life and its specifications are still unknown but we expect at a good battery life.
The product will supposedly house games on cards the same shape as SD ones which the user will slot into it. We just wait to see when the release date will be announced and when will be able to obtain a Sony Play Station Vita, to perform a complete test and review.
