A strong 60 inch LCD HD TV
Launched this year in February, the Samsung UN60D8000 is aimed at TV enthusiasts, according to the company that created it. This device is supposed to offer “incredible picture quality and advanced connectivity” as well as an elegant design which will attract immediate attention. This is one of those compact products that, helped by today’s technology, disappear when turned on and leave only the picture to be seen. As a result, the price of the UN60D8000 is very expensive and the image quality suffers from excessive brightness variation, poor screen uniformity and a glossy display with a lot of ambient light reflection. Read our review below to see what other conclusions our tests showed.
As reported in the beginning of our review, the Samsung UN60D8000 has a design called One which offers a barely visible 0.2″ brushed metal bezel that leaves the TV almost naked and makes your eyes concentrate instead on the screen. During our test this all made the image look as if it was floating against the background. This HD TV also features a sleek chrome edge, unlike what the UND7000 series had to offer. When put next to other TVs, this one sports touch-sensitive controls on the side. There’s also a stand shipping with the product, but it’s a rather ugly one. Another thing we didn’t like about Samsung’s new device was the remote control which refused to work and continually displayed a “need pairing” message even after we did pair it. But we liked the fact that it came with a full QWERTY keyboard on the back, although using the remote in the dark was hard to do, since there was no backlighting for it. The menus and settings worked faster than what we’ve seen in the past and they were accompanied with illustrations and text explanation.
Some uniformity problems
The Samsung UN60D8000 boasts a 60″ screen. Picture performance was so and so. First of all, the glossy display attracted a lot of bright reflections, but it did a good job of preserving black levels under overhead lights. Secondly, saturation was superb and skin tones looked accurate; however, the edges of the screen tended to turn blue and show colors as tainted in darker ranges. Thirdly, uniformity didn’t fare well at all: in midbright and dark scenes the left and right thirds of the display showed a cloudy look and appeared brighter than the middle third. Looking at the TV from an off-angle resulted in loss of black levels. Fourthly, black levels on the UN60D8000 were deeper than anything we’ve experienced before, but the poor uniformity made the outer edges of the screen look very bright; overall shadow detail in the central area of the screen was worst than what other TVs had to offer. Fifthly, video processing was one of the strengths of this device, because it maintained the cadence of a movie we were watching while at the same time reducing those pesky blurs.
1080p full HD resolution
Samsung’s UN60D8000 delivered an excellent 1080p full HD resolution with no flicker when we used it as a PC monitor. 3D image quality was also very good, in fact better than Panasonic’s models.
As for features, the TV we’re reviewing on this page has a very good web browser, built-in Wi-Fi, local dimming from its edge-lit LED backlight and many more. Sadly the company no longer offers a free pair of 3D glasses. Apps are also included.
At the end of the test we can conclude that the bottom line is that the Samsung UN60D8000 delivers good features and an excellent design, but things like poor screen uniformity might turn people off from buying it.
