A new Bada smartphone

Samsung’s family of Bada-driven smartphones has recently welcomed a new member, the S8600 Wave 3 model. The first Wave was the first smartphone to feature both a Super AMOLED display and a Hummingbird chipset. While sticking to the standard slim frame and metal body, this new product offers a unique interface and interesting features. But it doesn’t reach the same level of popularity as the company’s best Android handsets. We tested the smartphone a couple of days ago. Read on to find out what we think about it.

4″ WVGA Super AMOLED display

When we first picked the Samsung S8600 Wave 3 in our hand, we saw it was rather wide, mainly because the smartphone comes with a solid metal chassis. Half of the chassis slid up when we pushed a thin button on the rear of the device and it revealed the battery compartment with the microSD slots and a SIM card. The overall look and feel of the Wave 3 is that of a classy piece of work which makes a very good first impression on anyone who wants to buy it.
What about the display? Well, the smartphone we tested for this review features a 4″ WVGA Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of with 480 x 800 pixels. The display’s glass surface is resistant to scratches, a fact that we very much appreciate. The contrast, colors, sharpness and details were all top-notch; moreover, viewing angles were wide and we could look at it in bright sunlight without feeling frustrated. Unlike its predecessors, the Wave 3 sports capacitive call buttons around the center button an ambient light sensor; but the device lacks a camera shutter key. Typing messages felt great due to the big display and the virtual keyboard with its rounded buttons that offered extra space between them.Samsung-S8600-Wave-3

1.4GHz processor

The Samsung S8600 Wave 3 use the Bada 2.0 OS which has a number of novelties, like new contextual menus, a completely redesigned homescreen and so on. We could easily rearrange widgets and edit panes. The lock screen now shows message notifications and the weather widget. We experienced great multitasking and scrolling through the menu screens.

The latest S8600 Wave 3 uses a 1.4GHz processor. During our tests this translated into an absence of lagging whenever working with the smartphone. The presence of voice recognition is among the device’s best features, especially since it is very responsive; but remember, you have to speak slowly and distinctly to achieve that.

Dolphin 3.0 browser

Of course there’s also a browser and it is called Dolphin 3.0. The number of apps might not be generous, but the pre-installed ones are good enough and you can at any time download more from the app store.

As for camera, the one on the Samsung has 5MP and performance is very good; the photos and videos we took and shot had beautiful colors, as well as plenty of sharpness and clarity.
