Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
A powerful Android tablet
Looks like we are offered something new once again by one of the giants that create exciting products almost yearly for us to enjoy. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is one of these shiny new toys which are meant to make life easier for those who buy it and use it. It looks as thin as the iPad 2 and seems to be lighter when put near that one. But what really draws the attention is its design, speakers and cameras. Is it worth a try? Read our answer in the following review.
Bigger than iPad 2
After you open the box in which the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 arrives, you’ll be left in awe at its thinness and lightness. As we said in the beginning of our text, placing this tablet near the iPad 2 one will make you notice that the Samsung device beats the iPad 2 by more than mere inches; and it has a total weight of just 1.24pounds; when we took it in our hands, we were impressed by how light it felt and how easy it was to take it with us at work, in the tube and so on. Not only it has that, but the Galaxy Tab 10.1 got to have one of the cleanest designs ever made for such a product. The display measures 10.1″; surrounding it is a 0.8″ black bezel along with a silver aluminum outline on the edge. The 1280 x 800-pixel resolution produced great images, full of clarity, and the viewing angles were wide and exactly how we like them. The plastic on the back was unappealing – to say the least – when we laid eyes on it, but ah well, no gadget was ever perfect when we tested it for thus review.
Nvidia Tegra 2 Dual Core processor
From left to right sit the volume and power/sleep keys with the headphone jack. The top middle boasts a 2-megapixel camera facing the front of the tablet. Another camera is placed on the rear and this one is 3-megapixels. The right and left parts have a speaker installed on them; a universal connection port is to be found right to a mic pinhole on the bottom edge. Here comes something which draws some points from our admiration for the Galaxy 10.1: it provides no HDMI, no USB and no SIM/SD card ports.
In matters of processor, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 runs on Nvidia Tegra 2 Dual Core. Opening documents, Internet pages and apps was fast and we had no lags. In terms of operating system, there’s Android Honeycomb 3.1. Unfortunately it has no interface customization.
Very fast on the web
The applications included on this gadget are the following 2: Pulse and Samsung Apps. The first one is something like a news aggregator which can organize news items into small previews and categorize them into news, entertainment, social and so on. The second app only helped us in this test to download Rilakkuma pictures, which were some Japanese cartoon animals.
The speakers on this product worked well, as in they offered deep bass levels and overall very good power. The cameras of Galaxy Tab 10.1 took high-quality photos.
As for the web site speed category, we’ll just say “Wow!” Internet pages loaded even faster than the ones we tried on the iPad 2.
All in all, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 offers elegance, simplicity and other qualities that make it good to consider as your future tablet. But, if you’re the one who wants more from a device like that, we advise you to look somewhere else.
