Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0
A gadget powered by Android
The latest gadget to come from Samsung is Galaxy Player 5.0 and it is an oversized iPod Touch that runs Android. According to the manufacturer, this product is made for those of you who want to give the Android platform a try without having to purchase a whole new smartphone for that. The specifications on this device won’t be too appealing to people using the iPod, for instance, but they will certainly like the roomy screen spread, decent media consumption and access to more than 250.000 Android apps. Is this gadget worth a try? Read our review to find out.
Before starting our tests, we took a hold of the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 and tried to wrap our fingers around it; it was pretty difficult to do, due to the fact that this gadget is too big and too heavy to hold with one hand, especially if you have small ones. When we turned the Galaxy Player 5.0 over we noticed the following: a 3.2-megapixel rear-facing camera, the “Galaxy Player 5.0” name and 2 tiny speaker grills. If you don’t like to see smudges and fingerprints on your gadget, don’t buy this one, because it will display the latter for the whole world to see; on the bright side, smudges were visible only when we looked at the device very closely. The overall design of this gadget looks cheaper than on, say, iPhone 4S or iPod Touch, but its minimalist approach will please many fans.
800 x 480 pixels display
The Galaxy Player 5.0 ships with a virtual keyboard offering subtle haptic feedback and the possibility to choose between a regular and a Swype keyboard.
The left side houses the button for volume and the top edge contains a microSD slot. On the bottom sit a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microUSB port. As for screen, the gadget we tested came with a 5″ WVGA TFT LCD; the resolution of the display: 800 x 480 pixels. The size of the screen is perhaps the biggest advantage of the Galaxy Player 5.0, considering that more and more people opt for bigger displays to better read Internet pages and so on. Watching a streaming movie was a delightful experience, since colors, brightness, viewing angles and the like were superbly delivered; the only downside: black levels were muddy grey instead of deep.
TouchWiz 3.0 interface
In matters of operating system, the gadget we’re reviewing here runs Android Gingerbread 2.3.5. The interface is TouchWiz 3.0 and it creates a more versatile user experience than what we’ve seen on other devices so far. Among the novelties it brings is a custom notification bar for app alerts that users can access by swiping a pull-down menu from the top no matter what they are doing at a certain time.
The processor used by the Galaxy Player 5.0 is a single-core 1-GHz ARM Hummingbird, which shows in the device’s performance levels. But if you plan on playing a game that uses heavy graphics, you can do so without problems, since the gadget won’t explode. There are 8GB of internal storage; if you have a microSD card you can expand that to 32GB.
Not impressive camera
The music player with its integrated FM radio produced excellent sound, with more than great volume and clarity during our testing process. Bass-heavy songs sounded good and audio playback lasted for 60 full hours. The camera wasn’t that impressive.
The Galaxy Player 5.0 ships with more than 250.000 Android apps and twice as much in the iTunes store. The battery life managed to last for 9 hours.
In conclusion, the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 delivers superb sound, good performance and a long battery life.
