Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0
The universal gadget ?
Are you looking for a gadget with enabling you to do all kinds of things including taking photos, playing games, surfing the Internet and carrying your favorite music, movies and other media wherever you go? Samsung thinks it has the perfect solution in the form of its Galaxy Player 4.0, since the device practically offers all the features of Google’s popular Android OS without the annoying phone parts. Those who have already bought the gadget praise its usefulness, web browser and good price. After testing the product for ourselves we reached the following conclusion.
4 inch LCD display
First and foremost, the design of the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0 reminded us of the company’s Vibrant smartphone because of its black (also available in white) body made of plastic, rounded edges, minimalistic looks and sense of comfort when holding it. The gadget measures 2.5″ x 4.9″ x 0.4″ and comes with a weight of 121 g, which practically means that you will have no problem inserting it into your pocket or carrying it around with you at work. Moreover, the Galaxy Player 4.0 both looks and is solid, as our review showed us. The LCD display on this gadget is 4″ and sports a resolution of 800-by-480 pixels.
Beneath it sit three Android touch keys. A VGA camera is placed on the front and a second, 3.2-megapixel one, sits on the back. Between the two we’d choose the camera situated on the rear, because, when we tested the player, it delivered better results than the one on the front: sharpness and smoothness were both very good when we snapped pictures and shot videos. What we didn’t appreciate, though, was how long it took to lock in focus: 1.7 seconds.
Powered by Android 2.3.5
As for operating system, the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0 runs on Android 2.3.5 and uses TouchWiz extensions. With the help of the UI offered by this OS we had no problem with navigation. And we very much liked the many apps and games we found when opening Android Market, including Google services; there was, during our tests, even a Samsung apps store. Memory is made of 8GB and the user is able to create a 72GB Galaxy Player by swapping two 32GB cards for about $300 compared with the 64GB iPod touch’s $399.
The features installed on this device are varied and include, among others: Skype, Tango, Wi-Fi syncing and so on. Unfortunately, none of them was as easy to use as the ones present on the iPod. We didn’t see an iTunes equivalent; what we did come across were pretty confusing options instead of that one. To sync with our Windows PC we used the device’s free DoubleTwist application which didn’t work as seamlessly as iTunes.
Good battery life
To our great liking, the Galaxy Player 4.0 supported the majority of video and audio codecs available today, such as: MP4, DIVX, H.264, WMV, XVID, MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC and OGG. The earbuds we found in the box were not impressive, so we went and got a pair of headphones. The player presented no issues when we connected it to our Bluetooth headphones.
In the battery department, the gadget delivered good performance: it offered 8 hours battery life even when we set the screen brightness to the maximum and turned Wi-Fi on. As a comparison, the iPod managed only 5 hours and a half under the same conditions.
In conclusion, at the end of our review, the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0 was not as good as other devices of its kind, but it nonetheless worked well as a handheld gadget to listen music, play games and video content on.
