Samsung Galaxy Indulge
Just another Android smartphone ?
Are you a fan of Samsung and all its different gadgets? Then the launch of the Galaxy Indulge will be riveting news for you. This smartphone continues Samsung’s line of devices made of shiny black plastic that come along with good voice performance, features and other attractions. But, if we were to make a comparison between this phone and the Galaxy S II, the specifications of the latter are more appealing. The $399 price comes without a lengthy contract. Below you’ll find our impressions of this product.
The Samsung Indulge looks the same as any other Galaxy S smartphone, and by that we refer to the stylish and smooth black body with corners that are rounded, therefore easy to grip. With a set of measurements the likes of 5.2″ x 2.4″ x 0.6″, the Indulge is a lot shorter when put next to other smartphones. Furthermore, the weight offered, during tests, durability and a pleasant feeling when we held it for the very first time. Manufacturers haven’t equipped the rear with a soft-touch material, which only adds to the slickness of this device.
1GHz Hummingbird processor
Moving on to the specifications category, the most important one in our case is the 3.5 inch capacitive touch screen that has a resolution of the HVGA type. Although not as gut-wrenching as expected, the latter is enough to make the smartphone deliver good brightness and crispness. As we soon discovered, the display provided excellent responsiveness when we had to write a text message to a friend or browse the World Wide Web. The 1GHz Hummingbird CPU and the Android 2.2 operating system greatly contributed to that; the processor’s accelerometer in particular succeeded in rotating the phone’s UI from portrait to landscape view in less than a second and made multitasking as easy as saying “Cheese!” Users can choose between 3 very good keyboards: the usual one, a QWERTY slide-out (with backlit buttons) and the Swype one. You can be sure that the Galaxy Indulge allows for pinch-to-zoom gestures. Fortunately the phone has physical keys for Menu, Back, Google search and Home screen functions and they are quick to respond and pleasant to the touch.
3.2 MP camera
Features-wise, the Galaxy Indulge houses 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, applications and all the other standard ones. One thing the device lacks: mobile hot-spot capability. If you use the MetroPCS carrier, you’ll find that the smartphone featured in our review here contains its own store for downloading applications. Samsung’s Gmail app is one of two e-mail application users are able to program to their Exchange, POP and IMAP accounts.
For music purposes we used the Indulge’s integrated music player and we must say that we liked it. The phone’s 2MB of internal storage and the option of extending that to an amount of 32 GB helped us store a great deal of our music files. As for taking photos, there’s a 3.2 MP camera and its results are pretty decent if you can get over some dull colors now and then. Videos look OK. Watching the preloaded Iron Man 2 on the smartphone we tested was a rather satisfying experience.
Mobile-optimized Internet pages took 6 seconds to fully load, while full versions loaded in approximately 14 seconds. Results for 4G speeds were as follows: 1.3Mbps download and 1.41Mbps upload. If you think the device battery can last a whole day, you’re wrong; we had to recharge it twice a day when we reviewed it.
In regards to audio performance, this phone did really well when it came to voice quality and clarity and we heard no distortions or echoes.
The Samsung Galaxy Indulge comes with both advantages and disadvantages. If a weak battery doesn’t scare you away, you should give this smartphone a go.
