Samsung Focus S I937
A phone powered by Windows 7 Mango
There are many smartphones already configured with the latest Windows Phone operating system. Until a while ago, however, manufacturers of these handsets didn’t manage to make one which could satisfy a large category of customers. And then the Samsung Focus S I937 came and started a revolution with its design, screen, cameras and other features. The fact that it only costs $199.99 with a new 2-year contract and just $99.99 online will add to the device’s appeal. Find out from our review if the product is worth the while or not.
4.3 inch Super AMOLED display
The Focus S I937 is the same kind of elegant and open device as are the Galaxy S II smartphones. It comes in black, its sides are flat and its corners are rounded. As opposed to other Samsung phones, the one we verified is significantly larger and lighter. If you look at it for a bit, you will feel the need to protect it from scratches and damage caused by, for example, drops on the floor, because it doesn’t seem very solid.
You will, as we were during our tests for this review, awed by the device’s 4.3 inch Super AMOLED screen and the WVGA 800 x 480 pixels of resolution, as well as support for 16M colors. Thanks to these specs, the smartphone delivered vivid colors, very good levels of brightness, sharpness and clarity.
Focus Flash interface
Samsung’s Focus S runs the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango operating system, so the user interface consists of a start screen that features dynamic live tiles; a second display is used for showing the pre-installed applications. Under the screen we found the usual keys corresponding to the Home, Search and Back functions. Either side of the device, the top and bottom come with the standard Samsung buttons, charging port and headset jack. The most noteworthy feature of the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango OS is Focus Flash; this one ran on AT&T’s 4G HSPA+ network that, as our tests showed, was much faster than the 3G one. You’ll get, among other options, the possibility of threading messages sent between IM and traditional texting in the same thread, e-mail and social networking integration, IE 9 (with HTML5 support and no Flash), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and so on.
Online storage via SkyDrive
For memory purposes, the Focus S I937 comes with 16GB, but there’s no microSD card slot. To make up for this lack, Microsoft offer 25GB of free online file storage through SkyDrive; the latter was a very good option for saving videos, pictures and other such things.
As for processor, this smartphone uses a 1.4GHz that provides excellent internal speeds and makes multitasking a breeze. Using the Internet was a comfortable and speedy experience: mobile sites needed 13 seconds to load and normal ones loaded in 26 seconds.
Good pictures quality
The photos and videos we took and shot with the device’s 2 cameras – an 8MP and a 1.3MP – looked very good, with beautiful and vibrant colors, clarity and good details. We did see some ghosting and shutter lag, but they didn’t annoy us that much to make us stop using the cameras.
As we near the end of our article, let’s see how the Samsung Focus S did when it came to call quality. Voices of our friends were loud and clear, volume was good and we heard no background noises. The people we were talking to did mention some echo, but that was all.
Talk time was 6 hours and standby time was 10 days. The battery life lasted almost an entire day with heavy usage and 2 days when we used the smartphone moderately.
These being said, the Samsung Focus S I937 is a more than ideal present. It has good looks, a superb OS and a very good performance.
