Samsung Chrono review
A simple phone from Samsung
For those of you who fell in love with flip phones 8 years ago and missed seeing them on display in shops in recent years, Samsung Chrono is here to make your day. It is a simple, unassuming phone that does what a phone is supposed to do, without all the high tech features of today’s smartphones. Is it good ? Let’s see the test and the review conclusions !
This new product measures 3.70 x 1.83 x 0.67 in inches, weighs 89 g, has an internal display of 2.0″QVGA 240×320 pixels resolution and a standard rechargeable Lithium Ion battery which offers over 4.5 hours of talk time and a stand-by time of 526 hours.
Not impressive features
Among its features are: dual-band CDMA 188/1900, Bluetooth wireless, navigation key, shortcut key, speakerphone, text and picture messaging, an integrated VGA camera with 0.3 megapixels in resolution, the possibility to browse the Internet, auto key lock, 72 polyphonic ringtones, a multilingual text display, caller groups, multiple numbers per contact, picture ID, ring ID, a microUSB and hearing aid compatibility (M3, T3). Also, this Samsung Chrono features a calendar, clock alarm and calculator.
When talking about the design, some of you may say that all Samsung flip phones look the same. And yet, there are some difference between this Samsung Chrono and others of its kind: it has a flat top, square edges and a solid hinge. It is a light phone, easy to move from one pocket to the other or from a bag to the pocket of your jeans. The colour of this Chrono phone depends on the light: it appears steel blue in light, while in shadow it looks dark gray.
Medium quality of the camera
The external face of this flip phone features a VGA camera lense, a 1.7-inch CSTN display that includes a battery meter, signal strength and also data connection. The display houses the date, time and message indicator. The sides present a small but easy to use volume control on the left and a shared microUSB, a headphone charging port and the camera shutter button on the right.
The camera of the Chrono phone is not one of the best out there in our performed tests. Photos taken with it outdoors look very good: the colours are and remain bright. When taking pictures indoors, the quality of the image suffers from loss of vibrancy. Also, you have to keep still when snapping pictures; otherwise they will appear out of focus. On the bright side, Samsung Chrono’s camera device features night mode, self timer, colour-effects presets and white-balance settings. Images taken can then be used as wallpapers or photo IDs; you can also share them or even save them to an online album.
Easy to navigate menu
The screen of this flip phone is bright and the text is sharp. On the other hand, the menu icons leave something to be desired: they appear blurry. Users cannot change the font, only the font size, but they will find it easy to adjust the contrast, theme and backlight times. The menu is easy to navigate through; the phone features soft keys, a four-way navigation toggle and a central OK button. Users will find the alphanumeric keys on the dial pad easy to use. Various buttons give you user the possibility to open Nuance-powered commands and turn the phone’s vibrations on.
Without MP3 player
This new Samsung Chrono is ideal for those wanting to quickly pair Bluetooth-enabled devices while experiencing the hands-free option. Easyedge services offer the possibility to personalize this flip phone by downloading ringtones, mobile games wallpapers and business apps.
When talking about the address book, it can store up to 1000 entries. This product does not come with a music player or a microSD card slot for external memory. On the other hand, it features Tone Room; this is a storefront for purchasing more than the 24 ringtones this flip phone has.
The call quality is excellent even in very loud traffic or very noisy neighbourhoods. The speakerphone may present problems when going outdoors. Loading web pages works ok.
After this test, as a conclusion of our review, the new Samsung Chrono is a good pick for those who want a simple, reliable phone with excellent call quality at an affordable price.
