A phone with a big screen
If you’re a fan of big screens on a smartphone, you’re in luck, because the Pantech Pocket might just be what you’ve always been looking for. The not so popular Pantech company prides itself on creating products that make a bold statement when it comes to how they look and are successful (just think of the Laser, Link and other models). Let’s see how Pantech’s latest smartphone did in our tests.
The design of the Pantech Pocket is unique and, according to the people responsible for it, made to improve things like reading books, surfing the Internet and many others. The smartphone measures 4.5″ x 3″ x 0.44″, weighs 125g and its body has a texturized finish. Even though it’s so light, the device doesn’t leave you with the impression that it will break quickly, on the contrary. Our only gripe was the battery cover, considering that a few times its snap-on parts didn’t connect that well.
A cheap-quality 4″ touchscreen adorns the front of the Pantech Pocket, but it offers 600 x 800 pixels which assure brightness, clarity and good colors, not to mention it feels more solid than what Samsung or HTC creates.
Some small problems
We had no problems looking at the display and reading text; also, graphics were handled well during our review time. Sometimes our fingers would stick to the screen rather than smoothly gliding across it; it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get this smartphone. Under the screen, on either side of the device, on top, bottom and rear sit all the usual buttons, so if you’ve ever owned a Pantech product there’s nothing new on this one in terms of keys. The only unfamiliar thing is the placement of the microUSB port: in the middle of the spine; this fact made it hard for us to use the keyboard when we plugged the device’s charger in.
Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread OS
As for memory and storage space, the Pocket model offers the following: 600 MB of internal storage (with 350 MB available to the user) and a 2GB card (expandable up to 32GB). We thought it was enough for our needs, but maybe you’ll want something more. Be aware that this smartphone ships with a microSIM card instead of the usual-sized SIM card.
The operating system included by manufacturers is 2.3.4 (Gingerbread) along with a custom UI (with several design changes to Android) made by Pantech. The user interface is one of the most customizable and detailed ones today and its widgets are extremely useful. A a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S2 processor is used for the Pantech Pocket and we must say that we are quite impressed with it. It did very well in our tests and there were only one or two lags in total. The pre-installed web browser didn’t do quite so well, its main problem being with Flash content.
Taking photos with the product’s 5MP resulted in some really good images, even though their colors appeared faded at times. Video and audio quality, however, were bad.
Things like watching videos, writing text messages/e-mails, browsing the web and so on looked so much better and were so much more comfortable to do on this device.
Call quality was mostly good: voices were clear and loud enough for us not to need the volume button too often, there were no distortions and the smartphone didn’t drop calls at all. The battery lasted for almost one day before we had to recharge it.
The Pantech Pocket smartphone looks more like a tablet than a smartphone. It delivers a great media experience and features an excellent screen.
