A new 50 inch Full HD plasma TV

Plasma TVs should deliver better image quality than the usual LCD panels, and starting from this idea we began testing the Panasonic Viera TH-P50U30A, a 50 inch Full High Definition Plasma TV. The TV itself has a nice design although it didn’t really get our attention. The bezel might just be too large for our tastes, but it doesn’t harm the overall appearance. The only distinguishable characteristics are the discrete silver coloring behind the Panasonic logo and the cut-out bottom corners which are the proof that Panasonic actually tried to come up with something new to the usual design.

Good file compatibility

The TH-P50U30A is somewhere in between prices, not too expensive and not very cheap either, while its specifications would rank it as a less affordable device.
It’s true it has only three HDMI ports, but let’s say we can forgive that, two on the back and one on the side, two USB ports, SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot, composite inputs and headphone jack also on the side, and on the back, an Ethernet port, digital and analog audio outputs, a D-Sub VGA input and another set of component and composite inputs. The Viera TH-P50U30A doesn’t have built-in WiFi but you can connect a WiFi dongle to one of the USB ports, while you can use the ther USB port to playback content. It has support for JPEG, MP3, AAC, WMA, MP4, DivX formats and the most important of all, MKV.Panasonic-Viera-TH-P50U30A

600 Hz display frequency

The plasma TV is equipped with some new technology which during our tests it proved to be very efficient. We are referring to Intelligent Frame Creation Pro technology on one hand, which was designed to better process fast moving scenes. Together with the 600 Hz Sub-field Drive, the TV is able to deliver smoothly on-screen fast moving screnes by detecting the moving objects in order to ensure a good transition.

On the other hand, the TH-P50U30A also uses Real Black Drive system which is the reason behind the very good black levels. Our review model proved a very good, close to perfect balance of black and white, even during the scenes where contrast was more difficult to set. The good balance is also assured by the use of Viera’s 2,000,000 Dynamic Contrast technology.

Facebook and Twitter access

The Panasonic TH-P50U30A didn’t let us down with viewing angles, which are exactly as they should be. Even with a room full of people, there will be no complaints that they cannot see what’s on TV. The images delivered are crisp and clear from any corner of the room, maintaining also the contrast levels and the overall picture quality. A drawback for the screen performance would be the fact that it is highly reflective, lowering the image quality in a very bright room.

Panasonic introduced IPTV, which simplifies the way you keep connected to your favorite websites/ social networks. The menu is simple and we didn’t find any flaws worth-mentioning. Accessing Facebook or Twitter was fast and easy and we must admit it is really nice to see these pages on a 50 inch screen.

Review conclusion

The Panasonic Viera TH-P50U30A is a good plasma TV and if you decide to review it yourself, you’ll see that the image quality is really great, being able to deliver images in Full HD with a 1,920 x 1,080 pixel resolution. The bad parts are that there’s no 3D support or built-in WiFi, features which began to appear even on lower-end TV sets, but other than that we have no other complaints. There are five picture modes you can choose from, Dynamic/Normal/Cinema/True Cinema and Game and it uses a Dolby Digital sound system, which is capable to fill the room and deliver good sound.
