Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2

Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-G2

A DSLR camera from Panasonic

Another camera we will be reviewing today is the mirrorless system camera Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2, a considerable improvement from the G1 in terms of video mode, image quality, performance and build quality. We tested the device and here is our opinion.

Much improved

When we first saw the device, its design and body reminded us of the G1 series. The Panasonic DMC-G2 is compact and features superb finish and fit DSLR; its body is made of high-impact resin plastic. The camera comes in classic matt black, red and blue. The ports are covered in plastic plugs which make them look flimsy. When compared to its predecessor, the manufacturers of the gadget we tested for our review changed the placement of the SD card slot; this one now sits into the battery compartment and this means that users will change the memory card with great difficulty when using a tripod.Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-G2

Excellent lenses

The control layout of this model is also very similar to the one on the G1 one series. Some of the little exceptions: a 14-42mm kit lens (with excellent sharpness and without any wide-angle distortion or chromatic aberration), the AF mode dial comes with an extra layer with a side switch used to select between focus point options, the single adjustment wheel is situated on the back above the thumb rest, the Quick Menu and Film Mode keys now sit on the back of the gadget; the latter change was made in order to offer some space to the new illuminated button that activates the Intelligent Auto mode and the dedicated key which enables video recording.

Very good viewfinder

The 3″ LCD screen featured a quick and easy to use touchscreen interface which provided an alternative to the menu system and D-pad. It also offers new features to the camera, such as Touch Shutter (it activates the shutter by a single tap on the screen) and touch-focus system. The display of Lumix DMC-G2 provides a 460.000 dots resolution and can flip back against the body of the device for protection. We were pleased to see that it had superb brightness, anti-glare finish, refresh rate and a wide angle view; when we took it outside in direct sunlight we could view it without problems. The viewfinder of Panasonic DMC-G2 is an electronic one and offers great sharpness as well as the ability to magnify subjects in manual focus mode.

720p resolution movies

Among the better features are Film Mode setting, Intelligent Resolution technology and a selection of tone pre-sets (users will be able to individually customize them for sharpness, contrast, saturation and the like). The video recording mode wasn’t as good as the one sported by the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2, but still good. The camera managed to shoot 100 minutes at a resolution of 1280 x 720 at 60 interlaced frames per second with audio being recorded in mono with the help of an integrated mic; the device could optionally record in stereo through an external mic. Users can choose between two formats: AVCHD Lite or QuickTime motion JPEG.

Good overall performance

As its predecessor, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2 provided very good overall performance. While the time elapsed between powering on and getting ready to snap a picture was half 0.3 seconds, 0.8 seconds were necessary for the shot-to-shot option in JPEG single shot mode. The continuous shooting mode registered 2.5fps. Image quality was good, thanks to the device’s AF assist lamp which helped the camera take a photo from a distance of 4 meters. In terms of noise, pictures snapped at up to ISO 400 were very good with fine detail, nice colors and good dynamic range. On the downside, ISO 800 and higher offered unusable stills.

Review conclusion

After the test performed for this review we can say that the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2 DSLR is a good choice if you want a new quality camera. But there are definitely superior devices out there at the same price or cheaper.
