A powerful superzoom camera
The Panasonic DMC-FZ150 is a bulky superzoom camera with features that you’ll love if you’re a photo aficionado. Our review model is an enhanced variant of the Panasonic Lumix FZ 100, meaning that the 14.1 megapixel MOS sensor has been replaced by a 12 megapixel High Sensitive MOS sensor in order to achieve better ISO performance and for noise reduction. We tested this model and here is our review. 🙂
24x optical zoom
The DMC-FZ150 features a 24x optical zoom lens, a variety of higher quality buttons for advanced control and a 3inch tilting screen. The camera weighs 1 pound, 2.6 ounces and measures 3.2 x 4.9 x 3.7 inches.
The physical controls we’ve mentioned above include a shutter release, a mode dial, a Movie Record button, a drive mode button and an on/off switch, all located on the top. On the rear, next to the screen there are a control wheel, EVF/LCD toggle, AF/AE lock and a four-way control. On the left of the lens there is a switch to switch between focus modes and a Focus button that allows you to adjust the size and location of the autofocus area. On the left of the EVF there is the button that will enable the flash to fire.
ISO 100 to ISO 3200
There are no significant changes in the menu, so if you have used a Panasonic camera before you’ll have no problems in dealing with it. The menu gives you the possibility of making any desired adjustments, and the Quick Menu will allow you to make some settings for which there are no physical buttons, like flash settings, aspect ratio, metering mode and white balance. It responds well and you won’t get lost in any submenus and settings.
The camera is capable of shooting from ISO 100 to ISO 3200 at full resolution thanks to the company’s latest Venus Engine FHD II image processor. Of course, sacrificing the resolution to the minimum of 3MP, there is also possible an expanded High Sensitivity setting of ISO 6400.
Up to 12fps in full resolution
The Panasonic DMC-FZ150 is capable of realizing continuous shooting speed of up to 12fps in full resolution. The lens offer a 24x f/2.8- 5.2 optical zoom with a focal range between 25 mm and 600mm, equivalent to 35mm. These are good figures, but other cameras, like Canon SX30IS and Nikon P500 offer over 30x zoom, all revolving around the same price tag. The default aspect the DMC-FZ150 offers is 4:3, but available are also 3:2, 16:9 and 1:1. The resolution changes for each of them and for example, for the 4:3 aspect at full 12.1MP the resolution is 4320 x 3240 pixels, but it can be lowered to 10MP, 7MP, 5MP and 3MP.
AVCHD format files
We have tested the Panasonic DMC-FZ150 during shiny daylight, being able to play with its features. The result was satisfying, meaning we got bright and vivid colors. The camera offers a variety of eight creative control effects, these being Miniature, Expressive, Retro, High Key, Sepia, High Dynamic, Pin Hole and B&W Film Grain. They offer diversity to the shots and what is more, they can also be applied to videos. The battery life took about 240 pictures.
As for video shooting, the DMC-FZ150 can record videos in AVCHD format at up to 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and 50fps. The recording will lack the camera shake because of the optical stabilization. We were able to walk and record in the same time, without perceiving any motion sickness during the playback. It is also possible to take photos during the video recording, without actually interrupting it.
To sum up the test performed by our review team, we can’t say that we’ve been overwhelmed by the Panasonic DMC-FZ150’s performance, sometimes colors lacked the sharpness and colors weren’t particularly bright. The camera has though its strong points, we have to admit, like the variety of features, the large optical zoom and also high speed shooting, which makes it a worth-considering camera.
