We landed, once again, in the land of gaming laptops. With the thought of reviewing Origin’s $2800 EON15-S. This device is one of the few to have it all (well, almost).
A 15 inch laptop for gamers
The specs that the Origin EON15-S threw into our face once we started our test were as follows: a 15″ display, 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM, an Intel HD 4000 GPU, a high-end Intel Core i7-3820QM CPU, a 128GB solid state drive, 512GB SSD, 750GB and 1TB hard drives up to 7200rpm and hybrid storage with an optional micro SATA SSD and a high-end 2GB AMD Radeon HD 7970M graphics adapter.
The design of the Origin EON15-S invites you in. But its 3.2 kg of weight don’t make it a portable device. But that’s OK, because it is solid. And its dimensions are good: 55 mm x 375 mm x 255 mm.
Connectivity means the following: 3 USB 3.0 ports, 1 DVI, 1 mini-FireWire, 1 HDMI, headphone, line out, microphone and line in ports, 1 USB 2.0 port, DisplayPort, 1 Gigabit Ethernet, 1 SD card slot and 1 DVD burner. We also spotted single-band 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth options.
Good sound quality
Those games that come with full detail levels look good on this device. But, to make them look even better, it is advised to run the laptop at a lower detail level. You won’t like the sound quality offered by the speakers, though.
Encoding and converting stuff took such little time: half an hour for the latter and 40 minutes for the former. The battery will keep you going for about 2 hours and a half. While not a bad figure, it still isn’t as good as competing models.
Everything is glossy about the display. And we personally didn’t like it during the tests we did. Moving down from the screen, we were met with a nice touchpad. The feedback we got from it in this product review was good.
The keyboard is, thankfully, available with backlight. The keys on it performed well when we used them, meaning that we got great response from them. The backlight delivers various colors to opt for in your gaming sessions. These lights also offer the possibility to configure them according to your taste. The number pad had some issues with some of the buttons. But overall it was an OK one. Albeit looking like it should not have been there in the first place, because it was rather cumbersome to the general well-being of the keyboard.
2 coolers included
While we played with the Origin EON15-S, we did not feel the need to take it from our lap, because it didn’t get too hot. That’s thanks to its 2 vents. However, if you use this device for more than 2 tasks at the same time, its processor will start doing quite a lot of noise. We have yet to find a laptop that doesn’t do that, though.
The problem with storage here is that some of you will like it, some will not. For instance, the drive is formatted to reach 111GB. But at the same time, this drive is of a solid state nature. This means that you will be offered fast speed when it’s down to apps, file transfer rates and boot-up times.
The Origin EON15-S has many attributes to make it a good gaming laptop. But it also has cons among all of its pros. Even so, it is undoubtedly worth a shot if you are after something with lots of power and good looks.
