Nikon Coolpix L24 review

A camera similar with the Coolpix L22

The Nikon Coolpix L24 has the same weight, dimensions, control styling and design as the ones on the previous Coolpix L22 model. Does this camera perhaps differ from the latter by a better performance? Here are our test and review.

14 MP sensor

The Coolpix L24 sports the following specifications and features: 3.0-inch LCD, 14.0 Megapixels, 3.6x Optical Zoom-NIKKOR Glass Lens, 4320 x 3240 (14M), 3.6x optical zoom, 1/2.3″ optical sensor, 3″ display, built-in flash, 80/1600 ISO, 17MB of built-in memory, JPEG, 14 MP optical sensor resolution, NTSC/PAL, F/3.1-6.7 maximum aperture range, 3.9″ x 1.1″ x 2.4″, 181 g, 2 alkaline AA batteries, 2 AA NiMH batteries, High Quality TV Movies with Sound, Easy Auto Mode simply point and shoot, Frame movie mode, Landscape, Portrait mode, Close-up, Museum, Party/indoor, Back light, Beach/snow, Night portrait, Food, Fireworks, Night landscape, Dawn/dusk, Panorama assist, Copy, Sports mode, Sunset, 24 supported languages, audio/video (A/V) output / digital I/O (USB), ¼ (ISO 1222) tripod socket, AN-CP19 strap and Nikon ViewNX 2 Software CD.

A very good display quality

nikon-coolpix-l24And now some words about the design of the new Nikon Coolpix L24: the screen is one of the best out there and the device features a bulge on the right that’s intended for the 2 alkaline AA batteries. The on/off key and shutter release sit on the top panel, while the mode button, the playback one and a four-way control pad can be found on the back of the camera. Under the control pad you’ll see the menu key and a dedicated delete button. The bottom of the Coolpix L24 comes with a double locking mechanism and a small plastic flap; the tripod is placed underneath the lens.

Motion detection

The set-up menu includes Electronic VR, sound settings, card formatting, Motion Detection and image protection, among others. The Playback menu has image resizing, direct print and slide show. In the shooting menu you will find the following shooting modes: Smart Portrait, Auto, Movie and Easy Auto; there are also 16 scene modes, such as Night Portrait, Beach/Snow, Museum and Copy, just to name a few.

Weak face detection system

The Face Detection feature of Nikon L24 was a real disappointment: it didn’t recognize faces when the lighting was poor and it encountered serious problems when there were people wearing glasses.
The mode key activates the mode menu and the four-way control pad is used for menu navigation; with the help of the latter you have access to functions such as self-timer, flash, macro and exposure compensation.

Problems with the optics

The built-in flash features the following options: auto, off, slow sync, fill and red-eye reduction. It also has a range of 7 meters and gives even and very bright illumination.
During our test performed for this review, the new Coolpix L24 we noticed that the company still hasn’t done anything to improve the lens they use on their camera models. Its 37mm wide angle is not a true angle, so taking pictures indoors, scenery pictures and photos of several people sitting in a room is a real problem.

Low quality image stabilization

Another thing we noticed was that this product doesn’t come with sensor-shift image stabilization, but it makes up for that with a Motion Detection and an Electronic Vibration Reduction. The former makes sure that in low light conditions or when subjects are moving, the ISO is increased to enable the use of a faster shutter speed; the latter post-processes the image so as to reduce blurs. Unfortunately, none of these worked that well; we had to use a tripod and activate the flash to get pictures of moving subjects.
This gadget can shoot 29 minutes of content and the 640 x 480 video quality it offers is pretty good, although it’s better to use a tripod to mount the camera on for stabilization purposes.

Review conclusions

We hope our test and review has succeeded in convincing you that the Nikon Coolpix L24 is a nice camera for anybody. It’s not the best out there, but it sure delivers good performance.
