Nikon 1 J1
A new powerful digital camera
For those of you who already made a hobby out of the art of photography, Nikon welcomes you this season in a very friendly way. The news is out, Nikon has launched the V1 and J1 cameras in the Nikon 1 system, entering the interchangeable lens compact system realm. Quite a news, if you ask us, however Nikon 1 J1 was long waited on this market, by its rival, Sony. We’ve tested this camera and now you can read its review.
The Nikon1 J1 can be described, first of all, as a pretty camera. It is not only efficient and able to keep pace with our fast way of life, but it also expresses personality with the variety of colored camera bodies, from which we can choose. It comes in white, black, red, silver and pink and thanks to the amiability of the interchangeable lenses, it can be taken everywhere, whether it is a casual outdoor break out or a long waited family holiday.
To be more specific about Nikon’s 1 J1 new release, this fancy new gadget can surprise you a great deal, if you take photos just for fun, but it can also fail to reach the level of your expectations if you are a more experienced photographer.
10,1 megapixel CMOS sensor
It is capable of capturing instant shots, from the moment you push the shutter, using incredibly fast the new hybrid Autofocus, and it can also capture, in good quality, fast speed videos. At the basis of this performance lays the 10,1 megapixel High- Speed Autofocus CMOS sensor, specially designed for amazing image quality, with an ISO range of 100- 3200. And by amazing image quality of Nikon 1 J1 we mean that you pictures can be shot in full resolution at 60 frames per second, which is really impressive.
1080p Full HD movies
With the new Nikon developed CX-format, which is smaller that what is now on the market, the camera is capable for good results in video recording as well, taking amazing full HD movies at 1080p (30fps). The J1 can record either vibrant or smooth videos, and you are fully allowed to manual control over the video. We reviewed this feature and it really is impressing. We could make the desired adjustments, related to the aperture, shutter speed and also ISO sensitivity. We also made a stereo audio capture, by the help of the pair of front mounted mics, which did their job perfectly.
The appearance of the new Nikon 1 J1 is not that different than other cameras. It has a very solid look, even though it is completely made of plastic. We even carried it in a bag, uncovered, among other stuff, and not a single scratch was spotted. It doesn’t weight much either, and you can easily wear it around your neck, in a tiny handbag’, or just hold it. The power button is on the top of the panel, along with the shutter release and the movie record button. the lens release button is up front, by the help of which you can switch between the 10-30mmf/3.5-5.6 lens kit. And on the back there are the usual buttons for display, delete, and the five- position wheel, including flash, self- timer, exposure compensation and auto exposure or focus lock controls.
Not impressive at night
What really got our attention were the four shooting modes, out of which the most impressive was the Motion Snapshot. In this mode you can capture several one second silent clips, along with a music theme (Beauty, Waves, Relaxation and Tenderness ) which you will choose before hitting the shutter of 1 J1. When playing back on the camera, you will see the video with a 16:9 still, played in slow motion, with the selected sound. This is altogether fun and interesting, for a camera.
Good battery life
As a drawback, it did meet some difficulties when we tried to take some shots in dim light, the white balance was hard to select, but in bright light it did just fine.
Another interesting mode is the Smart Photo Selector, which speaks for itself. It is Smart, because it can choose between the consecutive shot images the best one, and it is also silent, thanks to the silent electronic shutter. The battery life was good in the test performed.
In conclusion, after the test performed, it is a pleasure to take photos with this smart Nikon 1 J1, and we did enjoy it to the full review. If you are choiceful, you may find some weak points, but otherwise, it’s a delight.
