LG Optimus 2X

A very fast smartphone

Because the new LG Optimus 2X is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, its speed is very good and this smartphone seems to beat competitors with great ease. However, the price paid by the device for this technology is a low battery life because the processor seems to consume a lot of energy.

LG decided to come back on the market of smartphone producers and the Optimus 2X is the first sign of this comeback. In 2010 the manufacturer focused on other types of products (it only released one smartphone back then: the Optimus Phone Windows 7). So it was time for the Korean producer to unveil the first smartphone powered by a dual core CPU, a revolutionary one: the Nvidia Tegra 2-1 GHz . This smartphone has been long awaited by technology addicted and now it’s finally time to review and reveal the capabilities of this device. Is the Optimus 2X powerful enough ? How much energy does it consume ? Does the battery resist more than usual ? Better see the review !

lg-optimus-2x-smartphoneAt first look, the new Optimus 2X seems to be a phone with a large display of 4-inch (10 cm). This characteristic, the plastic rear and its good finish with just 11 mm in dimension make the smartphone rather weighty. In fact, if you compare it to the Galaxy S, this version weighs about 30 grams more. The entire smartphone weights about 145 g. Theoretically, this device is made for guys. It is full of style and simplicity with its all-glass facade and black and dark brown back stamped with the LG and Google brands. Apparently, fans of high tech phones will be addicted to it and the feeling of impressiveness exuded by the Optimus 2X phone.

Good display and response time

Because this model is the successor to other smartphones with no connectivity problems, the same ideas were used. Connectivity has included a lot of features and possibilities.

So we have the following:

– a microUSB port to charge and connect to the USB 2.0 port of a computer;

– a standard stereo jack of 3.5 mm;

– a Card Reader Micro SD (up to 32 GB capacity);

– a microHDMI port which is able to let you to transfer / listen to music and watch videos on your TV;

– compatibility with Bluetooth standard;

– Wi-Fi b, g and n and 3G + for download speeds and amounts of 7.2 and 5.76 Mbit / s, respectively.

These capabilities in terms of connectivity are a pro for this model. Even though the phone is not similar with the Optimus Black (this model will be launched in May, 2011), which will incorporate the new technology from LG Nova, the display of the 2X offers a good image. The resolution is full and sports 480 x 800 pixels. There’s support for 16 million color. Brightness is excellent with a good value of about 375 cd / m2. Another positive point is an advanced multitouch capability. The response time is excellent and it’s a real pleasure to navigate the menu. The phone can be used in landscape mode, too. The virtual keyboard is easy to use. A real pleasure, actually.

Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core processor

Because it is powered by a dual CPU running at 1 GHz / core and with 512 MB RAM memory cache, the new Optimus 2X is a step forward compared to other phone producers. Because the device was available for tests, we decided to perform a full review using a complex analysis called Quadrant Advanced. With this test we are able to find what is the real performance of the new processor, access speed and its ability to render both 2D and 3D. The results were very good compared to the competitors’. The Optimus’ score was about 2668, a high value compared to the Nexus S, for example. The latter only got 1720.

Apparently, in 2D mode this smartphone isn’t better that its rivals. You can download from the Android Market an application called Tegra Zone, which seems to be able to increase the performance in games, for example.

A con of this smartphone is its battery. The capacity of the battery is about 1500 mAh. The 2X seems to require a lot of energy and the autonomy is not impressive. But values are medium and in tests we got about 4.1 hours of internet navigation on 3G network and about 7 h 40 min for communicating with friends.

Inspired by Galaxy S software ?

Apparently, the Optimus 2X seems to be inspired by the Galaxy S software. On the other hand, this here model seems to be more advanced compared to Sense, HTC or TouchWiz. the icons, for example, look like they drew a lot of inspiration from those found on the Galaxy S and the iPhone 4. However, for this model the graphics are not so successful.

The phone is able to successfully play a lot of video formats. WMV9, DivX and Xvid are supported, even HD 1080p. However, the MKV format is not available. We checked the camera, too. The sensor is an 8MP one and the pictures taken with it were good, even if you don’t use LED flash. However, the sensor is able to capture movies at 1080p resolution, too.

Review conclusion

The LG Optimus 2X is the most advanced smartphone on the market at this moment. In terms of speed, that is, because the new Tegra 2 dual core CPU does a good job. This smartphone does get points off because of the big energy consumption of the CPU. The battery life is still medium as value. The conclusions are clear, this is a phone full of high tech features and its price is relatively good, even if you buy the phone from the biggest phone operators.
