LG Octane review
A new smartphone from LG
LG producer have released a new phone called LG Octane. This model looks very similar to the LG EnV series of messaging phones for Verizon Wireless. Is the device worth a buy? We invite you to find out the answer from our review below.
In the design department, the latest LG Octane measures 4.21″ x 2.16″ x 0.63″ and weighs 128g. These specs make the device thick and chunky. Its body has a silver chrome border and a reflective screen; during our test we noticed that we could use the front surface as a mirror thanks to its shiny surface. The LG Octane sports a 1.76″ external display with 220 x 176-pixel resolution and support for 262.000 colors. These offer vibrancy, great detail and natural colors. The screen gave us the possibility to use it as a camera viewfinder, as a self-portrait viewfinder and also to view the songs we were playing at a given time.
tabbed-style menu interface
The menu of LG Octane has a tabbed-style interface; it was easy to use and the number keypad was split into 4 rows which made it possible for us to dial by feel. We didn’t have any problem with the keyboard: it felt very comfortable and the keys were well-spaced. It even boasted a resting area for thumbs. When we didn’t want to use the QWERTY keyboard on the second internal display we simply typed text messages with the help of the alphanumeric keypad. The camera lens and the LED flash sit on the rear of the phone; the headset jack, micro-USB port and the microSD card slot are on the right side and the camera and volume buttons are placed on the left side.
When we tested the LG Octane for our review we were pleased to see that we could arrange the screen for the best viewing angle when composing a text message. Graphics on the device’s display were superb and text looked sharp; the animated icons were definitely a very nice touch.
When discussing features, the LG Octane has the majority of the usual ones, plus some interesting ones. Text and multimedia messaging with threaded messaging support, phone book, speakerphone, alarm clock and vibrate mode are some of the basic ones. The gadget also offers mobile e-mail and is compatible with Mobile Broadband Connect, Skype Mobile and many more.
HTML browser included
The most important feature is the HTML browser which offers fast access to sites such as Bing, Fox News and Verizon’s ringtone store, just to name a few. Some improvements from the previous version of the browser: a Search box and a dedicated URL field.
The phone we’re reviewing today uses the EV-DO Rev. 0. This means that the LG Octane works with Verizon’s broadband services. In terms of music, the device’s music player supports formats such as WMA, MP3, AAC and AAC+.
The 3.2-megapixel camera did a pretty good job. Pictures snapped outside had sharpness, but were rather washed-out; photos taken indoors were significantly better.
Very low download speed
The phone’s camcorder could shoot videos in 320 x 240 or 176 x 144 resolution.
When it comes to applications, the LG Octane doesn’t have any. What it does have are games (Scrabble and Uno). There are 16GB of removable memory for external storage.
Overall performance was average. Call quality wasn’t all that great: we experienced digital distortion of our voices whenever we gave a call or were called by someone. Furthermore, the speed of the EV-DO Rev. 0 was disappointing: we downloaded a 1.9MB song in almost 2 hours. The stereo speakers offered good sound quality and the battery life provided 6.3 hours of talk time and 14.2 days standby time.
After our test we can say that the new LG Octane smartphone is a medium quality product. Is a good choice if you don’t have anough money to buy an expensive model.
