A mini-projector dedicated to movies
Small and white, the HX300 is a mobile projector able to read data from a USB port for such activities as video presentations. It has less than 800 grams in weight and is a mobile projector that can read, thanks to its USB port, PowerPoint presentations as Xvid and DivX movies. The LG HX300 is really impressive at first view.
Weighing less than 800 grams, this small LED powered light projector can be carried around with as much ease as when you carry an MP3 player. This gadget is made to be classified between a business and consumer projector, just like his old brother the LG HS200G model. Its DLP projector is able to display an image at XGA resolution (HD) of 1024 x 768 pixels. Its main strength is the ability to play DivX or Xvid files, but also to post office files such as Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations or PDF files with just any kind of device connected to its USB port. This small projector is versatile and not very expensive. What is it really like ? Let’s see !
This model is able to compete with any micro-projectors that fit in the palm of your hand. This is the kind of LG HX300 mobile gadget made by LG. Thanks to its compact dimensions (15.7 x 11.4 x 6 cm), it is easily transported with the included remote control in a beautiful bag provided by its manufacturer. Like all mini-projectors, it works with an RGB LED lamp which has the advantage of sporting a life of 30,000 hours. So a superior one compared to conventional incandescent lamps.
The weak point is the brightness of LEDs, which is very low. The order of hundreds of candelas / m2 is ten times more for conventional lamps. The HX300 boasts 300 cd / m2, which is 100 cd / m2 more than the LG HS200G model we tested in the past. Basically, LED projectors earn 100 cd / m2 annually so the future will increase this value.
In practice, we measured a brightness of 38 cd / m2 and a contrast of 759 : 1, while the Korean manufacturer announced a contrast of 2000: 1. This means that the projected image is easy to read in a PowerPoint presentation even in a brightly lit room. However, for photos or videos, it will be essential to have no light in the room. The measurements made with our colorimetric sensor showed that the image took on a blue color along with the factory settings. A quick navigation of the menus and everything is explained: the default image color is set to Cool. When it passes to Normal, the color balance is restored to normal colors.
If the display is correct, do not recreate a cinema screen at home: this mini-projector displays an image with 40 inches (102 cm) diagonal at a distance of 1.10 meters. Beyond this distance, the image gradually becomes blurred, so it’s usable only in these limits.
The settings of the projector can be changed from the directional pad on top of the device or from the menus that appear on the display after using the supplied remote. They are comprehensive and very easy to use. Navigation with the remote control is effective, although reaction time is not very fast.
The HX300 has a convenient USB port. It connects a hard drive or a USB key that is automatically detected. On the video side, the device played HX300 DivX and Xvid, but also, and more surprisingly, MKV files. Of course, we do not speak here of Full HD, its display is limited to XGA (1024 x 768 pixels). The navigation in the videos is very fast. The projector also reads Office files: PowerPoint presentations, Excel spreadsheets or PDFs. The rest of the connection is pretty good: HDMI, VGA, composite and component.
Too much noise
This projector cannot escape the major drawback of all models which have this small size: noise. Despite the LED lighting, the device and the two small fans built up a lot of noise: 44 dB! Its intention is to clear the purr of the projector when playing a movie, but it all becomes too annoying in the end.
The HX300 has a pair of stereo speakers, but they produce a somewhat powerful sound (2 x 1 watt RMS) which has no amplitude. Not enough sound to be enough for a room. The unit is equipped with an FM transmitter and the sound can be captured by a stereo that has an FM radio. So the gadget remains one that does not remedy the lack of an audio output worthy of the LG reputation.
Sold at a price of less than 550 euros, this mini-projector offers good value for the money. It is interesting for doing professional presentations by using the direct reading of PowerPoint presentations from a USB key. No need to carry a laptop to do a presentation: the projector is enough. The HX300 is less attractive for domestic use because of the lack of audio output.
