LG DoublePlay

A nice looking phone at a good price

When you say LG, you say quality. The company has been a maker of solid phones for a long time now and has acquired quite a lot of loving fans of its products. The first phone to become available in stores was the enV model that made LG famous overnight. Then they gradually moved on to more sophisticated handsets, such as the Enlighten and Genesis smartphones. These days the latest LG Doubleplay is making quite a stir among customers with its 2 display with touch capabilities, split keyboard, fast CPU and many other novelties.

1 GHz Qualcomm Scorpio processor

The design of the LG Doubleplay needs some getting used to. It certainly looks very much unlike the majority of smartphones thrown into the world. When we took it out of the box and looked at it before venturing to our usual tests, we saw how big it looked and how heavy it felt when we held it. Despite its heft, the device can also be considered as elegant due to a matte finish on its bezel. A 3.5 inch screen lights up the entire front of LG’s newest baby whose resolution of 320 x 480 pixels brings brilliant colors and sharpness to the experience. Swiping and tapping on the display opened settings and such in a very fast manner, a 1 GHz Qualcomm Scorpio CPU also heavily contributing to that. The interface on this smartphone is made especially by LG themselves and it provides a lot of helpful tools, shortcuts, options and all that jazz. The simplicity of the UI receives very good marks from us.LG-DoublePlay

A keyboard that splits in half

Why Doubleplay, you ask? Well, that’s because LG have implemented on this device a keyboard that splits in half and makes way for a second screen measuring, this time, 2 inch. This display was meant only for applications the likes of e-mail, browser, text messages and so on, as our tests for this review afterwards revealed. The multitasking this LG DoublePlay is offering by putting two different displays into a single device is a great step ahead for the company and it works really well; take this instance: we opened the built-in browser in the 3.5″ screen while on the 2″ display we browsed through tabbed windows. It might not be a brilliant idea for all users, but we find it pretty nice.

Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread OS

The processor aboard the LG DoublePlay is Android’s 2.3.4 Gingerbread version and we couldn’t be more satisfied with it, thanks to a much, much better UI (meaning faster and more intuitive than the ones before). All the usual LG apps, games and features are on this new release, too. Accessing the Internet is possible through 802.11 b/g/n wireless connectivity and Bluetooth 3.0. If you’re looking for a smartphone that supports mobile hot-spot, the DoublePlay is such a one; making calls over Wi-Fi is another possibility offered by the device.

Storing files, recording media and the like can be done via the 2GB of internal memory or the 2GB microSD card put at your disposal. Moreover, support is provided for 32GB cards.

5 MP camera

A 5 MP camera is all you’ll need to take extremely good photos and shoot attractive videos that will amaze your friends. Other things that will attract your attention and theirs is the awesome quality of made and received calls and that of the speakerphone.

Download and upload speeds are good: 1.2Mbps and 0.8Mbps. You will be able to use the smartphone for around a day before putting it to recharge.

Review conclusion

At the end of this review we think that the new LG DoublePlay sure is an odd-looking product, but if you get over that first impression, you’ll discover a very capable smartphone.
