Lenovo IdeaCentre B520

A 3D desktop on the market

Lenovo released a new 3D capable desktop which they called IdeaCentre B520. Our tests revealed that this device was among the best ones we saw in a while, thanks to its value for money translated into great hard drive space, quad-core processor, the multitude of formats it worked with and so on. If you want to find out more about this product, read our following review.

Better design

When aligning the Lenovo IdeaCentre B520 near its predecessors, we saw that the design of the desktop we’re reviewing today was changed for the better. It is now more stylized and has angled edges. The team behind Lenovo added something new to their latest gadget, namely seamless glass in front of the display. This one makes use of a technology known as projective capacitive; in other words, the screen of the IdeaCentre B520 resembles the one found on tablets and smartphones. This fact helped a lot during our test, because we experienced super responsiveness from the display; another great advantage was the fact that we could clean it with more ease.Lenovo-IdeaCentre-B520

Intel Core i7-2600 processor

The touchscreen used by the product measures 23″ and features 1.920 x 1.080 pixels; we were able to easily watch content from a moderate distance. The keys are touch capacitative and they come with LED backlight, meaning more intuition. The Bluetooth keyboard and mouse provided by manufacturers wasn’t that great, because their response was sluggish.
The Lenovo IdeaCentre B520 runs on a quad-core Intel Core i7-2600 processor which comes installed with 8GB of DDR3 memory. This all means that the desktop delivered a great performance when we tested its overall speed. Windows 7 Home Premium is the operating system bundled with this device.

Nvidia GeForce GT 555M

And, because we mentioned that this product offers 3D, we’ll start off by saying that IdeaCentre B520 uses a technology whose name is Nvidia 3D Vision and which is helped in its job by 2 features: Nvidia 3D glasses and Nvidia GeForce GT 555M. The first of these options boasted by the desktop made it possible to play games, watch Blu-ray movies in 3D, look at pictures we snapped with our camera and many more things. A major improvement is the fact that this pair of glasses can be charged by using the included microUSB cable. On the downside, there was no icon for opening the 3D option, so we had to look quite a bit through folders to enable it. Some of the games and movies looked good.

Not for gamers

Since we’re here, let’s see how the desktop performed in the games department. The only problem we encountered was when we turned the 3D feature on, because then we lost half of the frame rate. As a piece of advice: if you’re a passionate gamer, avoid this device.
As for ports, the Lenovo IdeaCentre B520 sports all the important ones, including Gigabit Ethernet 802.11b/g/n wireless. What’s worthy of notice is that the touchscreen has input for the Component audio/video and HDMI ports; this means that you’ll be able to watch content from all kinds of external sources.

In terms of power consumption, we were satisfied with what we experienced and the warranty was 1 year for both labor and parts. If you don’t understand something, you can call the company’s call-center for free. Online support was a bit of a let-down, though.

Review conclusion

As a review conclusion, the Lenovo IdeaCentre B520 is a desktop worth buying. You won’t be disappointed with it.
