Kodak PlayTouch Zi10
A HD camcorder from Kodak
The team at Kodak has released a new camcorder. Its name: Kodak PlayTouch. Or, more simply, the Zi10. Customers have high expectations from this device. We wanted to see for ourselves whether it was any good, so we tested it. Here is our review.
3″ LCD touchscreen
The newest PlayTouch Zi10 camcorder measures 6.6″ x 2.9″ x 6.1″ and weighs 635g. When it comes to looks, the gadget has an improved design when compared to its predecessors: it is now sleeker and more comfortable and looks more solid thanks to its casing which is made of metal. The camcorder is available in several colors, such as: black, silver, teal and red. We had no problem, when we tested the device for our review, to slide it from a pocket to a bag, for example, or to hold it in our hand. The front of PlayTouch comes with a fixed focus 35mm lens, a mic a record light and an IR receiver; the back houses a 3″ LCD touchscreen and a Record/Select key. The jack for connecting headphones or an external stereo microphone and the switch for moving from normal shooting into macro (when taking close-ups) sit on top of the camcorder.
microUSB and mini-HDMI ports
The battery compartment cover is under the lens; during our test, the former creaked every time we adjusted our grip on the device. What is worse, the mic will record this sound when shooting videos; fortunately, we could change that by pushing down the two metal clips that hold the gadget’s cover in place when it isn’t turned on. An SD/SDHC memory card slot sits under the power button; the left of the product houses a door which protects the microUSB and mini-HDMI ports, an AV jack and a USB connector. The touchscreen of PlayTouch Zi10 comes with the Glare Shield feature, three levels of screen brightness and an auto option for letting the device set it; the former meant that we could choose from two filters which would enable us to see subjects in reflective outdoor situations without any problem whatsoever. The touchscreen was responsive, but it didn’t manage to make use of its full 3″.
1080p Full HD at 30fps
Because the Kodak PlayTouch is only a point-and-shoot gadget, its manufacturers haven’t thrown that many settings in it. There is Face Detection, Electronic Image Stabilization, four video recording modes (namely WVGA, 720p at 60fps or 30fps and 1080p at 30fps), Share, Safe and Playback modes and, lastly, the possibility to shoot 5-megapixel stills. The main menu was very easy to navigate and the main screen boasted several icons for operations such as capturing stills or video, accessing the setting menu and turning on one of the three color effect modes.
When it came to video quality, the Kodak PlayTouch Zi10 didn’t manage to impress us. After we shot some still we noticed aliasing, artifacts and color banding.
Weak digital zoom
While colors turned out well, the scenes showed contrast and moving subjects got ghosting. Whenever we panned the device we saw big amounts of judder. When we switched from the 1080p to the 720/60p, things didn’t change that much for the better. The digital zoom actually made matters worse. The only thing we liked was the low-light performance, which was good. Audio quality was decent. The sharing possibility worked well thanks to the camcorder’s Kodak Share Button app and the MediaImpression software. All we had to do was connect the device to our PC via the USB port and then upload content to sites such as Facebook, YouTube and the like.
While it may not be the best camcorder out there, the Kodak PlayTouch Zi10 is a nice device with unique features.
