Huawei U8510 Ideos X3
A phone with online storage service
Huawei has released the second phone that provides online storage service, the U8510 Ideos X3. The phone is slim and light and besides its small price it doesn’t have a cheap look at all. You’ll have a soft hand grip once you hold this phone thanks to the soft plastic material it’s made of, while on the front the design is complemented with silver sides. We’ve tested this new smartphone and this is its review.
Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS
On the bottom of the screen you get the touch sensitive buttons but you have to pay attention because they are not the custom ones. You get the back, search and menu buttons, but the “home” button has been designed as a physical one, at the bottom of the phone right on the silver edge. You won’t miss it.
The IDEOS X3 is the successor of the company’s X2, who was launched on Android 2.2.
The X3 on the other hand comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and with a Qualcomm MSM7227 600MHz processor of 256MB. The operating system will not lack updates when these will be available because the IDEOS X3 offers support for Huawei’s technologies, Handset Over-the-Air and Online Upgrade (HOTA) solution.
The U8510 X3 is very slim as the Chinese company claims that the phone’s width is only 11.2 mm and measures 104 grams. It features a 3.2 inch capacitive multi-touch screen, a 3.2 megapixel rear camera plus a front-facing one. The smartphone has 3D UI with homepage animations and comes with a variety of Android Apps.
The IDEOS X3 offers support for HSDPA 7.2 mbps, Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi b/g/n and features a microUSB port and a microSD card slot that allows expanding the memory storage up to 32GB. The phone also features a 3.5 headphone jack, music player, FM radio with RDS and an average Li-Ion 1.200mAh battery, which will allow around 4hours of talk time.
Unfriendly onscreen keyboard
We encountered some annoyances during the test, so we’ll list them here. The on-screen keyboard is rather unfriendly. It caused a lot of typos and it is too big for the screen, so writing text messages on the IDEOS X3 will bring up some problems. The screen is another problem maker. It is not as sensitive as a touch screen should be. Sometimes it didn’t register at all our gestures, either swipes or taps and we had to insist in order to make it respond.
Another thing is the poor quality camera, which lacks both Autofocus and flash, limiting you possibilities a lot. The picture colors were again poor and dim, so we guess the camera won’t be of much use on the IDEOS X3.
Low quality camera
The U8510 X3 looks nice and is well equipped for the small price. It is a good deal if you are not looking for the best smartphone; this one will offer the basic modern features, multi-touch screen, Internet support and Android Gingerbread, but you’ll have to deal with low quality camera and a small resolution display. The battery life has lasted more than a day on normal use, but first time we got our hands on it and used it intensively it couldn’t pass the 24 hour threshold.
The Huawei IDEOS X3 was launched together with the Huawei Sonic (U8650) smartphone, both offering Cloud+ online storage service.
At the end of the test performed for its review the conclusion is a certain one: the new Huawei U8510 IDEOS X3 comes with a good price and if you happen to be on a budget the X3 will satisfy your needs. It runs Android Gingerbread and looks decent, but has some basic issues like unresponsive touch screen which is also very reflective and a difficult to type on keyboard.
