A solid phone ready for holidays
Launched in the same month with Motorola’s Droid Razr and Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus, the HTC Rezound meets powerful competition but is not worried not in the least, because it has strong and enough features to stay on top.
The HTC Rezound is part of Verizon’s 4G LTE smartphones, it looks great, like any other HTC actually, has a big screen and a solid package, which means it’s ready to meet the holidays with confidence. You will see below, in the review of the device, that it has some weak points even compared to its HTC brethren. But you should make an opinion of your own, so read on.
Super AMOLED display
Let’s begin with the hardware, because it’s the one that helps in making the first impression. As almost all the latest HTC devices, the Rezound has a unibody design plus a touch of red around the camera on the back, in the backlighting for the touch-sensitive front buttons and on the headphones.
The smartphone will make its presence felt, once you have it, as it measures 129 x 65.5 x 13.7 mm and it’s also rather sturdy. The HTC Rezound features a 4.3-inch S-LCD display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution. The screen is bright and pleasant to the eye, but in comparison to the DROID RAZR which uses a Super AMOLED display, it is actually not that bright. The screen is big enough to make web browsing, video and picture viewing a real pleasure. The 8 megapixel camera on the back is capable to record HD at 1080p and features a LED flash. Video calls are supported by the front- facing 2 megapixel camera. On the right side there’s a volume rocker, on top you’ll find the 3.5mm headset jack and the power+ lock/unlock button and on the left, there is the MHL port which will allow the use of a microUSB connector or miniHDMI out cable, plus an extra microphone that serves for noise cancellation.
Qualcomm 1.5GHz MSM8660 CPU
The HTC Rezound is powered by a fast Qualcomm 1.5GHz MSM8660 dual-core processor, with Adreno 220 GPU and 1GB of RAM. The storage memory is 16GB, but the smartphone comes with a preloaded 16GB card, offered by Verizon.
For connectivity, we have of course LTE, and its back-up, EVDO Rev.A, WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS. It lacks though the UMTS/WCDMA support, because the new gadget is not a World Phone. The device also includes an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a ligh/proximity sensor, along with a digital compass.
Beats Audio technology
The red touch we mentioned before has a reason behind, this being the presence Beats Audio on the device. The Rezound is the first to offer this feature on the US market. We liked how the Beats implementations is presented. The smartphone ships with Beats in-ear headphones, which once plugged in a tuning profile immediately pops up.
HTC Sense 3.5 runs as UI and we like it because it is very easy to use. In rest, the Android offers the usual access to Google Apps and Android Market. Verizon also makes its presence felt by introducing more apps, like NFL Mobile, VZ Navigator, Polaris Office and many others.
Medium voice quality
During our tests on the Rezound, we noticed good but not great voice quality though there were no connectivity problems or dropped calls. The camera did extremely nice photos during the day but video recording let us down a bit, because it doesn’t perform well with moving subjects. The battery life survived throughout the day, with LTE on and intense use, which is like almost all smartphone batteries can last.
The overall performance of the new HTC Rezound smartphone was good at the end of the test, as expected for a powered by Android device.
