A new smartphone from HTC

HTC is a world-renown manufacturer of smartphones, touch phones, PDA phones and mobile computer devices. Their latest smartphone, the HTC Imagio XV6975, is taking the place of the Touch Diamond2 for Verizon. Customers are raving about it on specialized sited, praising its overall performance. Is this smartphone really that mind-blowing? Find out the answer from our test and review below.

QWERTY keyboard

When we first saw the gadget we were very delighted with its appearance. The HTC Imagio XV6975 comes with a soft-touch finish and shiny plastic back plate. The device measures 4.5″ x 2.5″ x 0.5″ and weighs 105g. These make the new HTC smartphone wider and taller than the Touch Pro2. When we held it in our hand it felt very comfortable.
The gadget sports a 3.6-inch touchscreen and full onscreen QWERTY keyboard; the display has a resolution of 480×800 WVGA and is resistive. The touchscreen worked great when we tested it. The resolution of Imagio XV6975 provided superb image and text quality; the only problem was when we used the device outside: we had difficulty reading it in the sunlight. The on-screen QWERTY keyboard made typing a fast and easy experience. Because the product sports an upgraded Intuitive HTC TouchFLO 3D interface, navigating between menus worked like a charm. 2 touch screen interfaces

The XV6975 smartphone gave us the possibility to choose between 2 touch screen interfaces; we could either opt for the HTC TouchFLO 3D or the Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional. Moreover, it can show the date, clock, missed calls and e-mails, calendar and many more. The Send, end, back, Start and Mobile TV buttons as well as a zoom bar sit under the display; the volume button is on the right side and the miniUSB data port and 3.5mm headset jack are placed on the bottom. The back houses an external speaker, a 5MP autofocus camera and a kickstand. When we tested the smartphone for this review, all the aforementioned buttons did a very good job. The menus were extremely easy to navigate and the home screen was fully-customizable.

Powered by Windows Mobile 6.5

The operating system used by the HTC XV6975 is the Windows Mobile 6.5 one. This one was definitely improved from its predecessors. It now features, beside the touch-friendly user interface, an enhanced browser with Flash support. It also enabled us to see alerts when we were on a call. The operating system boasts several features such as: customizable Today screen, new Start screen, My Phone Service, improved Windows Media Player Mobile, FM Tuner, Mobile TV, MSN Widgets, V CAST Music with Rhapsody, designer-theme-based phones and many more. Some preinstalled programs: Office Mobile Suite, Adobe Reader, voicemail and Mobile IM, just to name a few.

No Flash support

In terms of web browsing we could use either Opera Mobile or IE; the former worked very well, while the latter was a disappointment in terms of speed. Unfortunately, Opera Mobile has no Flash support and no support for embedded videos in web pages.
The pictures we took with the 5MP autofocus camera were crisp, sharp and had accurate colors; on the downside, bright white areas were overexposed and the quality suffered greatly when we snapped pictures indoors. Videos were recorded in H.264 and H.263 (at CIF 352 x 288 resolution) and in MPEG4 and 3GPP2 (at a VGA resolution of 640×480). The image quality wasn’t that great.

Good battery life

In terms of connectivity, the smartphone offered us the possibility to use it as a modem for our notebook when we connected the two devices via an USB cable. We didn’t need to get an extra PC card thanks to the Mobile Broadband Connect. There’s also Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity with stereo music streaming (A2DP) capabilities and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi networking. The memory of the device can be extended up to 16GB with a microSD card slot.
The Imagio XV6975 provided up to 5.3 hours of talk time and up to 324 hours of standby time on a single charge.

Review conclusion

All in all, the teview conclusion is that the HTC Imagio XV6975 is an excellent smartphone with a lot of cool features and great speed.
