HP TouchSmart 520-1070
A desktop PC for the end of the year
For a while there we thought we’d see no new desktop computer this year, but then we heard about HP’s TouchSmart 520-1070 and we regained our faith in manufacturers and their capabilities. This all-in-one gadget will, we’re 100% sure of it, steal your heart away with its high-end specs, generous entertainment offerings, display and, the most important aspect, the fact that users will be able to transform it into a monitor. But more on that you’ll find if you read the following paragraphs of our review.
Not impressive design
We’ve all become used to black gadgets by now and, quite frankly, we prefer them over white or red ones anytime. There’s something about this color that adds elegance even to the cheapest and poor in specifications product. The HP TouchSmart 520-1070 is aware of that and shines through with its plastic body of a monolithic design. The 23″ display with touch sensitivity is held from the base, also made of plastic (a silver one this time), with the help of 2 vertical arms, so to say. The base is home to a hinge used to adjust the product’s angle and behind the screen you’ll see all the main components. Faithful to our methods, we tested the said hinge and found it to be very solid and capable of bending 60° and 90°. Looking at the screen when searching for something in the C: partition or when we wanted to find an info on the net didn’t make us frown in annoyance, because the 1.920 x 1.080 resolution supplied the display with everything we wanted from clarity, color, sharpness and so on.
Wireless keyboard and mouse
If you want a keyboard and mouse to go with the TouchSmart 520-1070, no need to buy them, because this desktop PC has a wireless keyboard that shares a USB wireless receiver with a mouse. Something not many all-in-one gadgets have is a slot-loading Blu-ray/DVD+-RW drive, and you’ll find such a feature on the HP 520-1070 desktop PC. Inputs, jacks and ports are as follows: 4 USB 2.0, 2 USB 3.0, 1 HDMI, 1 Gigabit Ethernet and others. 1 memory card reader is more than enough if you don’t ask for too much. If you have several devices for entertainment purposes, the HP TouchSmart 520-1070 has a splendid tuner for TV, audio outputs and 1 remote control.
Should you be an Internet junkie, the gadget offers Bluetooth and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi. One of the things that caught our attention during tests was the 2TB hard drive with its 5.400rpm, since Samsung’s Series 7 and some of Sony’s Vaio line only pack a 1TB drive each.
2.8GHz Intel Core i7-2600s CPU
The HP 520-1070 also gives the Sony Vaio a run for its money, because this device comes with a 2.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i7-2600s CPU compared to the Core i3 on the Vaio set. Our benchmarks presented us with incredible speed when it was time to perform such actions as opening files, firing up the Internet, watching a movie and all the usual stuff. The quality of graphics was very good, with the product being able to play Lost Planet 2 with ease. So, in less words, the gadget is perfectly capable of playing 3D games in the light category.
HP’s latest desktop PC received the Beats Audio option and the speaker bar placed directly below the product’s display made listening to music or watching a film a most surreal and wonderful experience.
