HP Pavilion DV6605US
An old fashion 15 inch laptop
HP is one of those companies which offer customers great quality products. If you are in need of a new laptop, then you should consider one of theirs. The recently launched HP Pavilion DV6605US promises to be “a great choice for both families and business travelers on the go.” Does this device rise up to HP lovers’ expectations? We decided to test the laptop and here is what we found.
Good quality plastic
First things first, let’s see how the latest HP Pavilion DV6605US did in terms of design. As we all know, HP products are known for their good looks and this new model is no exception. The product we are reviewing today comes in a really sleek body with an appealing glossy black. The display cover is made of plastic imprint finish which protects the laptop against scratches. The body is made of rounded smooth edges; during our test, this feature made the product very easy to hold and carry around. With measurements and weight such as 1.7″ x 10.1″ x 6.5″ and 4.08kg, the HP DV6605US is one of the thinnest and lightest laptops out there.
1280 x 800 resolution display
The front sports a 15.4″ WXGA high-definition BrightView display which looked good when held in direct sunlight. The 1280 x 800 pixels resolution, 18% larger picture than standard 15″ screens and 18 % improvement in contrast ratio make this a much improved display for HP, especially when compared to previous models. The product features a touchpad with on/off button, dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad and 101-key keyboard; they were all comfortable and very easy to use.
Athlon 64 X2 TK-55 processor
The DV6605US laptop uses a 1.8 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-55 processor (with 512 KB total L2 cache). This one improved general performance by up to 80% and gave us the possibility to multitask with the help of something called Direct Connect Architecture which work well when we performed the review. Simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing didn’t crash the system. The laptop’s AMD Digital Media Xpress technology translated into great playback and multimedia performance. Another technology, namely the AMD PowerNow! power management one, meant that the battery life was longer than usual because it could be expanded to 65%.
Weak sound quality
In the hard drive and memory department, the HP DV6605US comes with 160 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) and 1 GB of installed RAM (2 x 512 MB DDR2). The device also sports a DVD/CD drive; the latter is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data.
Sound quality wasn’t that impressive. The pair of speakers had lacking bass and midrange and volume levels were average.
The laptop boasts NVidia GeForce Go 7150 graphics/video card; this one provides up to 287 MB of video memory which is shared with the system memory and it features a technology called PureVideo. The latter offered beautiful and accurate colors, crystal clear images, smoothness and precise image scaling for videos. It also provided support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0.
A lot of programs included
When speaking about connectivity, the DV6605US from HP ships with the following: 1 VGA monitor port, 2 headphone jacks and 1 microphone jack, 3 USB 2.0 ports, 1 notebook expansion port 3, 5-in-1 memory card reader and many more. There’s also a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot and built-in wireless LAN compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks.
The device runs on Windows Vista Home Premium. Some of the preinstalled software: Microsoft Office 2007 Student and Teacher Edition (60-day trial), Microsoft Works, HP PhotoSmart Essentials, Muvee Autoproducer Basic Edition, PC Recovery, Roxio Creator 9 Basic and Symantec Norton Internet Security 2007 (with 60 days of Live Update).
The 6-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to 2 hours of battery life.
After our test performed for this review we can conclude that the HP Pavilion DV6605US is a good choice if you want a basic 15 inch notebook.
