Gateway NV55S05u

A new budget laptop

The category of budget laptops has a new member: Gateway NV55S05u. Being more affordable doesn’t mean performance has to suffer. We gave it a go and wrote this review here.

15.6 inch display

If you’re tired of the standard black color laptops usually come in these days, you should know that the manufacturers at Gateway dressed this product in white plastic; the color bears the name Moonlight White and, even though we don’t like it, we got to admit that it looks quite good. The rear of the lid and the inner palm rest come in beige dots; above the keyboard and the upper display bezel there’s also white plastic. With its 5″ x 9.9″ x 0.99″-1.3″ and 2.63kg, the new NV55S05u is heavier and larger than its competitors.Gateway-NV55S05u
The screen is big with its 15.6″; it sported a resolution of 1.366 x 768 pixels, which, while we tested the laptop for our review, delivered good brightness levels. On the other hand, when we looked at it from up close we noticed a pixilated view. Viewing angles weren’t something to talk home about: looking at the device other than directly resulted in deteriorated image quality.

Not impressive keyboard

Curious about the keyboard? Then we’ll tell you that the latter had the shape of an island and sported a full number pad; its keys had enough space between them and were larger than the ones found on other laptops we tested in the past. As a side note, the touchpad was really small, which translated into our inability to correctly and smoothly perform finger gestures. At times, both the keyboard and the touchpad seemed to not reply that fast.
The latest Gateway NV55S05u works on an AMD A8 processor that boasts 1.5GHz quad-core A8-3500 APU; this one combines graphics and a CPU. The processor wasn’t that speedy, but we still managed to multitask; the only issues we were confronted with were those times when we wanted to install software and play more complex games. There were no problems with the heat: the device remained cool throughout 15 minutes of using it for various activities.

Weak sound quality

One of the features of this device is the webcam. This one is integrated into the NV55S05u and can snap pictures at 1.280 x 1.024 pixels and videos at 1.280 x 720 pixels. The performance it offered was pretty good. Another feature is the speaker bar; unfortunately, sound quality was disappointing, so we needed to plug some headphones in to get the most out of music and such.
The gadget has what others in its category don’t: great memory and hard drive, namely 6GB and 640GB.

Average battery life

Moving on to ports, inputs and the like, the Gateway NV55S05u sports 3 USB 2.0, 1 VGA, 1 Ethernet, 1 HDMI and many others.
With an included 6-cell battery, we could use the laptop for around 3 hours on a single charge, which was pretty average; it lasted even less when we played games.
The warranty offered by Gateway for its NV55S05u is 1 year and you have access to telephone support.

Review conclusion

So, after the test performed for this notebook review we can conclude that if you don’t have enough money to spend on a better device, the Gateway NV55S05u is a decent pick.
