Garmin Nüvi 1490LMT
A beautiful GPS device
Ever since we tested and reviewed several GPS systems of navigation branded by Garmin we’ve come to appreciate these little fellows for their accuracy, features, tremendous maps and overall smooth performance. When we heard there’s a new model in town, the Nüvi 1490LMT, we’ve heavily anticipated its arrival at our address and, once that was done, placed it on our windshield and kicked it to life to see whether it was as efficient as its predecessors. Read on if you, too, want to find out.
2D/3D maps access
It’s great to own a GPS device with a consistent screen and the Nüvi 1490LMT deserves all the credit since its 5″ display is wide enough to accommodate all the important data you’ll ever need on the road. After we touched the screen at the beginning of our test we saw in crystal clear detail the directions we were given on the spot and its colors were more than beautiful. Text was big and even without glasses we could read it.
The interface of the Garmin Nüvi 1490LMT was as efficient as ever and before getting directions, we were asked to mention the address and use the View Map option. After that we started using the display and searched various services and points of interest (or POIs, in this case 6.000.000 of them). Directions were given by a voice in the usual turn-by-turn fashion that is, in our opinion, the best method for a GPS unit. We loved the clarity and perfect pronunciation of this voice and the speed with which it mentioned street names exactly before reaching them the next minute. The device has City Navigator NT street maps that are chocked in details, speed limit signs – a trademark of Garmin – and 2D/3D maps. When we wanted to have a peek at the terrain surrounding us we used the pre-installed digital elevation maps; when we wished to get to a certain address fast, we waited till the gadget calculated our position via its very precise HotFix satellite prediction.
Planning ahead is no problem, because the Nüvi 1490LMT has the possibility of saving a total of ten routes as well as show previews for simulated turns. Using your cellphone while driving is dangerous, that’s why this device is implemented with the option of making hands-free calls over Bluetooth wireless technology. Whenever someone called us and we wanted to answer, we tapped the display and afterwards spoke into the mic.
Maps, navigation info and so on are always getting actualized with a feature called Lifetime Map and Traffic that costs the user nothing. A second very important advantage of the Nüvi 1490LMT is lane assist with junction view that turns lane guesswork into actual turns and exits that make finding your way into unfamiliar surroundings easy and stress-free.
City Xplorer feature
Navigating through the transit in a new city turned into a pleasant affair at the click of city Xplorer, a feature that informed us about means of transportation, walking areas, time needed to get somewhere and so on.
Providing navigation instructions is not the only thing this Nüvi 1490LMT can do. Garmin thought ahead of its time and made its latest GPS device a helpful tool in saving users gas and money, converting world currencies, viewing photos, finding out what time it is in various cities and many more exciting offers. And, if you ever find yourself lost, the gadget has a “Where am I?” emergency locator that lands a helping hand no matter where; you can even find hospital and police stations with it.
The Garmin Nüvi 1490LMT is one splendid GPS product and we’re glad we got the opportunity to use it, because it proved, if it was even necessary, that Garmin is among the best manufacturers of such helpful devices.
