Fujifilm FinePix S4000
A powerful super-zoom camera
The FinePix S4000 from Fujifilm is a well built camera that offers you the way to taking great photos. The camera has a high-quality wide-angle 30x optical zoom lens which is the equivalent of 24-720mm, a 14 megapixel sensor and an electronic viewfinder. If you already think this is ok for what you need, there is more to tell. It offers image stabilization, face detection, full manual controls, can capture movies in HD at 720p with an HDMI output connector and has tracking autofocus. Like the S3200, our review model can capture movies in MPEG-4 with H.264 compression, which makes files smaller but videos sharper. This was just a quick run over the S4000’s best features, but read on to find out the results of our full review.
30x optical zoom
The first thing we noticed and automatically also liked in the S4000 was that the camera is very easy to use and hold, and has a compact design. The huge 30x zoom was the second thing which made an impression on us. Thanks to the 24mm wide-angle zoom lenses we were able to capture only within seconds away, both landscapes and long-zoom shots, in great quality. Because its compact design, it is easier to react and capture nice shots than it would be with a D-SLR camera. The zoom button is located around the shutter release and worked very smooth during our tests.
The Fujifilm S4000 has a good hand grip thanks to the textured material where you hold the camera. On the bottom of the camera you have a tripod bush and the battery compartment which hosts four AA batteries. The camera ships with a set of four batteries but these are not rechargeable so there’s no charger in the box. However, the battery life was better than other similar cameras, launched by competitors.
Dual Image Stabilization technology
What we didn’t find on the bottom and we would have liked, was the SDXC compatibility. The camera has support for 16GB which may seem like enough, but extra space is always a very welcomed feature.
Among its features, we would like to describe a few. The Dual Image Stabilization for example is very useful because it allows you to take sharp shots with no blur, even if the light conditions are poor or the zoom is high. This feature is a combination between the high sensitivity and CCD shift image stabilization, the result being shots without blur, even with shaky hands.
Automatic scene detection
Scenes are automatically detected and the camera will let you know what is more appropriate to use between Portrait, Landscape, Macro, Night, Night Portrait and Backlit Portrait. It will also recognize when someone in the picture is blinking, and will warn you accordingly. The Motion Panorama feature will take three consecutive shots and stitch them together and the result is a single panoramic shot.
The FinePix S4000 gives fine zoom possibilities, handling well even hast moving subjects. It has a nice design and allows you to hold it just in one hand and also has a friendly menu. We liked the possibility of using AA batteries instead of lithium-ion ones because these are easier to replace is most of the situations. The pictures we’ve taken look good and the colors are nice but with zoom the quality goes down in value, in the sense that the shots look more like paintings, but colors are still strong.
We don’t think it’s the best, but depends on the user. It offers a lot of features, you can make many adjustments and you can even decide in-camera which photos to go right on Facebook, thanks to Fujifilm’s easy-web-uploader. The 3.0inch large LCD display is bright and allows you to compose great shots. Overall, at the end of the review we can conclude that the new Fujifilm FinePix S4000 is a good digital camera.
