Flip UltraHD review

Easy to use and affordable camcorder

If you are the kind who prefers small, easy to use and affordable camcorders, then the Flip UltraHD is the best option for you. We took the gadget on a spin and here is our review and test.
The device comes with specifications such as: 4.25″ x 2.19″ x 1.17″, 161 g, 2-inch LCD (320 x 240 resolution), 1280 x 720 resolution (video quality and performance), digital zoom lens, 30 frames per second (constant frame rate, progressive scan), AAC audio compression, H.264 video compression, MP4 files format, fixed-focus (1.5m to infinity) lens, 1/4.5 inch, 1.6 megapixel CMOS sensor (2.2 x 2.2 µm square pixels), ultra low-light sensitivity (>1.4 V/lux-sec) with automatic low light detection, f/2.4, smooth multi-step 2x digital zoom, built-in speakers, built-in wide-range stereo microphone and HDMI Mini.

Good design and features

Flip-UltraHD-camcorderNow let’s see some features of the Flip UltraHD camcorder: user guide, preloaded FlipShare software and 2 AA Batteries (included) or Flip Video AA Rechargeable Battery Pack (1.2 Volt NiMH rechargeable through USB and sold separately).
When it comes to design, this camcorder model looks the same as its predecessor; the only difference to the latter is the small Cisco logo on the back of this model. If you decide to buy it, you will have the possibility to choose from 3 color combinations: white with magenta trim, white with silver and white with blue; also, you can personalize it if you want to buy it directly from the company’s web site.

Very slim and ultra portable

And now some details about where to find features on this camcorder: the lens sits on the front, along with a red recording indicator light and a mic. The power button is placed on the right; the left side sports a Mini-HDMI port and a switch for flipping out the USB connector. When you turn the device upside down you’ll see a lock that secures the battery compartment cover and a tripod mount.

The Flip UltraHD is a slim and ultra portable little gadget; its interface is simple and therefore easy to use. What is more, the LCD screen is anti-glare. The control panel features keys for Play, Delete, Record and a four-way directional pad; the up and down buttons on the latter will help you zoom on objects or people and they will also control volume if you want to play back a video. With the left and right keys we were able to browse through our different recordings. Unfortunately, the gadget doesn’t come with a menu; but it features setup options, which are the following: date, turning on/off button sounds, time, language and the record light.

Facebook file tranefer

When we wanted to watch, save videos, edit/create movies or upload stuff to our Facebook page, we simply plugged the USB connector into our Windows XP SP2 and waited till the FlipShare option appeared on the screen. Your friends will be notified by e-mail whenever you post a video. Moreover, if you have an iPhone, there’s an app which enables them or your family to watch your creations from their own iPhones and even iPads.
With the help of the FlipShare software that is preinstalled into the Flip UltraHD we had the following possibilities: we could capture still-image snapshots, create custom movies, organize videos and share them publicly or in private.

Not very good image quality

During our test and review of this device we noticed that image quality is vastly inferior to the one on previous models: as a consequence, colors lack brightness and vibrancy and pictures of people look way soft. There was also a problem with the noise and if you want to record someone dancing, then don’t: your video will be blurry and not in the least watchable on a HDTV.

Review conclusions

So, after our test and review of the Flip UltraHD, here is what we think: buy this camcorder if you’re a beginner, but if you’re a pro, there are other suitable devices out there.
