Dell Precision M4600
A new 15 inch notebook
Loved by some, hated by others, Dell has managed to build itself a good reputation over the years. They are best known for producing either great or bad laptops. The team behind this company decided to launch a new one and they called it Precision M4600. Advertised as one of the best out there, the product we tested a while back gave a solid performance which really impressed us. Here is our review for more information, should you want to buy this laptop.
4 display options
As you already know, we’ll begin by addressing the issue of design. The Dell Precision M4600 comes in light black and is made of a mixture of magnesium and aluminum. Holding it was quite a chore, because the device weighed around 9pounds (after adding extras and so on). The chassis of the laptop is made to withstand extreme humidity, altitude, temperatures and vibration; it is also shockproof and dustproof.
The new Dell M4600 notebook is equipped with the following screen: a 15.6″ one; there are 4 display options to choose from: one has a resolution of 1.920 x 1.080 pixels with the antiglare technology, the other has the same resolution without the antiglare feature, another contains 1.366 x 768 pixels with stylus support and a four-point capacitative touch and, finally, there’s one more with the same resolution as the latter but lacking its two options. We checked the laptop which had the first display in our list.
Intel Core i7 2920XM processor
This device offers a number pad and a keyboard which were very easy to use. There’s also a track stick with 3 keys and a multitouch touchpad which both did a good job. During our test we were glad to see that the keyboard was backlit. Returning to the screen, the Precision M4600 delivered very beautiful colors, sharpness, a lot of very fine details; viewing angles were impressive.
The processor used by the laptop we’re reviewing here is a 2.5GHz Intel Core i7 2920XM; when we tested the product, it loaded quickly and moved fast, so we didn’t come across lagging. About the memory and storage space part: Dell’s latest laptop comes with 8GB of 1.600MHz DDR3 and 500GB with 7.200rpm; they were more than enough for us, so no complaints of any kind there. As for operating system, there’s Windows 7 Ultimate, the 64-bit version.
Nvidia Quadro 2000M graphic card
Moving on with our review, let’s give some info about ports, inputs and such. The Precision M4600 caters to a user’s needs with 5 USB, 1 HDMI, 802.11n Wi-Fi, mini FireWire, SmartCard slot and many more options. What concerns sound quality, we had no problems with the integrated stereo speakers.
In the graphics department, this product provides Nvidia Quadro 2000M with 2GB GDDR3 and 3 graphics cards. We were able to play both older and newer games in the best of viewing conditions and the above mentioned graphics cards helped us with graphic arts, 3D modeling and much more.
Moving on to battery of M4600, we could use the laptop for a variety of tasks for about 3 hours on a single charge, which wasn’t that great when comparing this device to others. But what we liked about the 87Wh battery was the fact that it didn’t make this product heavier than it already was.
A great plus is the warranty: 3 years, which can be extended.
You can be sure that the Dell Precision M4600 is worth a shot.
