A new 10.1 inch netbook from Dell

Dell is one of the most popular companies in the world. They make laptops and computers well loved by many people around the world. In 2011 they launched a new Inspiron series netbook. Its name: Dell Inspiron Mini 1018 4034CLB. Does it live up to expectations? We took it for a spin and here is our review.
The new Dell Mini 1018 4034CLB sports the following specifications: 9.2 x 3.9 x 14.6 inches, 1315g, Intel Atom N455 Processor (1.66GHz, 512KB Cache), 1GB DDR3 Memory at 667MHz (1x1GB), 250GB Hard Drive, 10.1-inch of WSVGA LED backlight display screen with 1366 x 768-pixel resolution, Intel GMA 3150 Graphics, Intel NM10 chipset, Windows 7 Starter operating system, built-in speakers, 0.3-megapixel webcam, Wireless-N Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n), integrated sound card, 6-cell lithium ion battery and 1-year limited hardware warranty.

Beautiful design

Dell-Inspiron-Mini-1018-4034CLBThis new netbook also comes with 2 USB 2.0 ports, video output, 1 headphone, microphone, Fast Ethernet (10/100), 3-in-1 memory reader, AC adapter and printed documentation.
At first glance, the Dell Inspiron 1018 4034CLB is a solid-looking product. Its design is beautiful and sleek; it’s also a small and light gadget. The keyboard is bigger than those on other laptops and the touchpad features discrete buttons; Dell has introduced a new palm rest that is fingerprints-proof. All of these translate into a sense of comfort for users.

Sharp and clear display colors

The 10.1-inch widescreen display looks great: it is bright and colors look sharp and clear. During our test we were able to access websites without the constant and annoying need to use left-right scrolling like we usually did with other displays. The 1024×600-pixel resolution looks great when playing videos in the HD 720p display and 16:9 aspect ratio.
The fact that this netbook is small and slim enables users to work with it in compact spaces; this is a big plus for people working in small, tight offices.

Without optical drive

On the downside, the Mini 1018 4034CLB netbook doesn’t have an integrated optical drive and this is why you’ll have to connect an optional external drive to one of the USB ports.
Our test showed that the Intel Atom N455 processor running at 1.66GHz is a fairly strong one: we were able to run most of the web sites and applications that we downloaded to our device. But running more complicated software like Photoshop, for example, is not a good idea: the speed of the processor starts to slow down considerably.
The 6-cell lithium ion battery delivers up to 6 hours of power on a single charge.

Microsoft DirectX 9.0 support

The integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator offers fairly good graphics. It comes with Microsoft DirectX 9.0 support. Gamers will especially delight in the Dell 1018 4034CLB’s graphics, because they will find it easy to play a generous array of games, such as Star Wars Jedi Knight series, Half Life 2 and Doom 3, just to name a few.
Accessing the Internet is easy and quick with this netbook’s built-in Wireless-N Wi-Fi connectivity, whether you use the Internet at home, school or at work.

Windows 7 operating system

The Inspiron 1018 4034CLB comes with a preinstalled Windows 7 Starter. We found this to be an advantage. It makes using a netbook an easy operation: you’ll wait and type less. Also, connecting to the Internet is fast and easy. Desktop navigation is improved; you’ll be able to quickly create a home network and afterwards share files and printers. Windows Search will help you find anything you want on your PC. The options Sleep and Resume are working more quickly than ever and you have the possibility to watch, pause, rewind and record TV by clicking the Windows Media Center.

Online backup service from Dell

The Dell DataSafe Online backup service is a nifty tool for data protection. It helps you back up important data to a safe and remote storage site via a broadband connection. Once you set it up, the service will automatically back up your data and protect it against all kinds of danger.

Review conclusions

Now that our test and review are over, we can say the following: the newest Inspiron Mini 1018 is the ideal netbook to stay in touch with loved ones and workplace everywhere you go. It’s easy to carry, easy to use and it will keep you entertained at all times.
