Coby Kyros MID7024
A correct tablet at a good price
Each of the many tablets produced nowadays promises to be better than the last one launched a short while ago. Buyers are getting more confused by the hour because of that and the large number of options to choose from. A lot of them are simply too expensive and don’t live up to expectations; and then there are those which are cheap and offer a great performance. It all burns down to the idea that the best thing to do is to think hard about the reason you want a tablet and then scan the market. In this review we will give you insight into the Coby Kyros MID7024 model.
7 inch display diagonal
We’ll start our review by offering some information on the design of this tablet. The Coby Kyros MID7024 looks stylish and not at all cheap as other gadgets we tested in the past. As well as looking good, the product is solid; we say that because it resisted superbly to the many times we dropped it to the ground. Holding it and transporting it were both very easy to do, thanks to the lightness – 0.39 kg – and measurements – 7.7″ x 4.8″ x 0.5″ – of the tablet. Similar to the other gadgets inundating stores everywhere, the Kyros MID7024 features rounded edges.
The screen is a generous 7″ and it is a touch responsive one, however we had to push a little harder to get a reply from it. Also, touching multiple places at the same time was difficult. In other words: you’ll have to get used to it, because eventually they will get it to work. The 800 x 480 image resolution was enough to ensure really good watching conditions.
Telechips TTC8902 1GHz processor
The Coby Kyros model has a rather small memory: only 4GB. Smartphones today have much more than that, so you might want to get another tablet if you’re into generous memory space. Or use the microSD slot on this device to expand the memory to 32GB.
Since it costs little, expect the processor – a Telechips TTC8902 1GHz one – to not run so well. In terms of operating system, the tablet presented here operates on Google Android 2.2 and the performance is overall good.
Rather than offering access to the famous Android Market, the Kyros MID7024 comes with AppsLib, which translates into limited options when it comes to applications.
Google Android 2.2 OS
This made the tablet not compatible with current Android apps. But, if you’re an avid reader, the Kyros MID7024 sports an app called Aldiko E-Book which will keep you busy for hours.
Strong points include ports (a headphone jack, 1 miniUSB, 1 miniHDMI and a microSD), battery life (with 7 hours on a single charge), multimedia possibilities (with support for music and video formats, Adobe Flash, PDF documents and many others) and integrated 2.1-megapixel digital camera. The latter, while not the best of the best, managed to snap pictures which looked pretty good and held its own when we talked to people in other countries. The sound offered by the built-in microphone was also good.
Using the Internet for various purposes was made possible via integrated Wi-Fi. To sum it up the test performed by our review team, the Coby Kyros MID7024 is a reliable tablet with a very good price to take into account.
