Casio Exilim EX-H5RD review
Another digital camera from Casio
Another Casio camera we tested was the Exilim EX-H5RD one. Is it a good purchase? Or should users buy another one? Here is our review.
10x optical zoom
The camera comes in different colors. You can choose from the following: black, silver, red and blue. It is a very small and slim device with its 5.3″ x 5.3″ x 3.2″ and 589 g, which makes carrying it around and sliding it in and out of a pocket or bag extremely easy; what is more, the product was very comfortable to use when we took it in our hands. The body is made of metal and is quite good-looking.
The device sports a 10x optical zoom, a 2.7″ LCD screen and an ultra wide 24mm lens which can zoom, according to manufacturers, to 24mm on the telephoto side. The resolution is 12.1-megapixels and it did very well in our test, rendering crystal-clear detail in the subject; the EXILIM Engine 5.0 processor made sure that colors turn out excellent and that the quality of pictures is further improved with rich tonal gradation.
When we wanted to take photos in a small room, the 24mm ultra-wide angle of EX-H5RD was very helpful thanks to the 10x optical zoom lens that brought faraway subjects up close.
Very easy to use
Once we took the camera out of its box to start review it, we found it was very easy to use, as were previous Casio models. When we wanted to snap a picture we had little to wait between pushing the button and waiting for the camera to spring to life. The main menu was extremely easy to use; therefore even beginners will find it a piece of cake to navigate through the Exilim EX-H5RD camera’s various settings and features.
Interesting features included
When it came to features, the Casio Exilim EX-H5RD provided the following: Dynamic Photo Animated e-Greetings, CCD-shift image stabilization, 41 Scene and Effects modes, YouTube capture mode, Face Detection, Makeup Mode, High Resolution HD Movies, Best Shot and One-Button Video. The Dynamic Photo Animated e-Greetings feature was very attractive, because offered us the possibility to place a moving subject on whatever background we chose, by cutting it out of some of the pictures we took in the continuous mode and afterwards pasting it on a different still photo that formed a background. Photos taken with EX-H5RD using the CCD-shift image stabilization feature turned out very sharp and clear, because it mechanically stabilized the image every time it detected camera movement.
1280 x 720 movie resolution
During our testing for this review, the High Resolution HD Movies option offered really beautiful content at a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels (720p). The device provided some excellent portraits thanks to the Makeup mode which provided sharp and properly exposed faces, softened facial shadows due to very bright sunlight and, finally, adjusted smoothness of a subject’s skin. With the YouTube capture mode feature we could easily and quickly record, save and customize movies we shot in order to upload them to YouTube.
Vivid Landscape technology
One of the most beautiful effects in the Scene and effects mode was the Landscape one that came with two options: a Mist Removal one and a Vivid Landscape one; the former offered very clear images when there was fog around and the latter enhanced only the most beautiful colors.
In terms of shooting videos, the camera offered some fine results in good weather and worse in low light; zooming in worked, but when we tried to zoom out, things didn’t go well.
In conclusion, the Casio Exilim EX-H5RD is a nice choice overall. But if you are a professional who wants a superior device, then you should look elsewhere.
