BlackBerry Bold 9780
A new phone with the same features ?
The new smartphone coming from BlackBerry is stocked by its manufacturers with BlackBerry OS 6. This device sports a higher-megapixel camera than the one found on the previous Bold 9700 and it also contains a much better flash memory. As a minus, this product has the same features and so on as its predecessor. Our tests showed us that, overall, the BlackBerry Bold 9780 is a solid smartphone when it comes to messaging. Below you’ll find out more of what we experienced during the testing phase for this review.
Almost similar design
There were no surprises concerning the design of this device, since it looks similar to the Bold 9700 one before it. Like that one, the Bold 9780 has the same 4.29″ x 2.36″ x 0.56″ and 4.3ounces. we liked holding it, because it felt light and comfortable. The sides have a soft-touch finish to them and the battery cover is textured. On the diagonal the display is 2.44″; it comes with 480 x 320 in way of resolution, which means that you’ll get clarity and sharpness in the same great measure as was the case with this smartphone’s relative launched earlier. We had no gripes when it came to looking at content or reading stuff on the screen. However, the only time when we had to put on a pair of glasses or simply zoom in was when we viewed Internet sites, because the text was much too small.
Small display thumbs
When we looked under the Bold 9780’s display we didn’t find anything new. The screen were touch-based and there was an optical touchpad which was of great help with navigation through menus and items. On either side of the body were a user-defined convenience button, volume button, a microUSB port, the usual 3.5mm headphone jack and a customizable shortcut. We enjoyed the fact that the smartphone also came with lock and mute keys situated on its top. The back boasted a camera, flash and a microSD expansion slot. The keyboard is the same as that on the device’s predecessor: buttons come in good size and there’s a slight ridge to them, which makes pressing easier. People with bigger thumbs should be advised to look for another smartphone, since this one is not for them.
BlackBerry OS 6
As for operating system, the BlackBerry Bold 9780 runs on BlackBerry OS 6, which is an improvement from the other versions. So, besides user interface changes, we got an improved web browser, universal search and multimedia features, just to mention a few.
Among the features we came across a speakerphone, smart dialing, text and multimedia messaging, Bluetooth 2.1, 3G support, GPS, Wi-Fi and many more. Furthermore, we were able to make calls over a Wi-Fi network.
The Bold 9780 can deliver corporate e-mail in real time. To make sure you have no security problems, people behind BlackBerry added enhanced security features to this smartphone, such as SD card encryption, remote wipe and the like.
2GB microSD card included
Apps come in the form of Twitter, Facebook and other important social networks. We also found, during our tests, an RSS feed aggregator.
Memory-wise there are 512MB of flash memory and a preinstalled 2GB microSD card.
As for camera of Bold 9780, the 5-megapixel one managed to take decent photos, but there are far better ones on various other smartphones.
Call quality was mostly good, so no complaints from our end. Speakerphone performance was clear, though voices sounded a bit hollow. 3G speed was acceptable, with full sites loading in around 25 seconds. The battery life was also good.
The BlackBerry Bold 9780 is, overall – at the end of review, is a pretty good option to consider if you want a new smartphone. But you’re better off with its predecessor.
