BlackBerry Bold 9650
A powerful smartphone
Should you feel the need to buy a smartphone you can use for writing text messages and which offers world roaming possibilities, then BlackBerry’s Bold 9650 might be the right device for you. Or so many of its fans and many reviews claim. Should you trust them or not? We tested the product and hope to give some help with our following review.
If you’ve already owned a BlackBerry before, the design of the latest Bold 9650 won’t come as a surprise; but there are two changes: this model has an optical trackpad instead of the usual trackball and it is heavier than its predecessor. During our tests, this aspect helped a lot while navigating the smartphone and we very much enjoyed the fact that we could change its sensitivity, meaning that we could make it move faster if it moved like a snail. Getting it a bit dirty didn’t stop it from working great. As for weight, the device is now 136g. All these aside, external controls and the QWERTY keyboard are the same as the Tour model.
Moving on to features, the Blackberry 9650 smartphone includes a couple of new ones, such as: dual-mode functionality and integrated Wi-Fi (802.11b/g); the latter option came with DNS lookup, WEP encryption, diagnostics and many more. As for the dual-mode functionality aspect, the phone worked with GSM and CDMA technologies for world-roaming possibilities via Sprint’s CDMA/EV-DO Rev. A network. Standard features include smart dialing, text and multimedia messaging, voice-activated dialing and so on. For network connectivity, the team at BlackBerry installed Bluetooth and GPS. The phone offered support for e-mails (up to 10 personal/business POP3 or IMAP4 e-mail accounts) and Microsoft Exchange among others. Apps are also present: popular Facebook, Flicker, Sprint Music Store and others.
Good loading speed
While we tested the product, connection speeds were very good: Internet pages loaded in 6-31 seconds.
Memory-wise, the device is preinstalled with 512MB; this meant there was more room for different applications.
Buyers can get themselves some of the following accessories for the smartphone; some of them: belt holster 2GB microSD card, travel charger, SIM card, USB cable and a wired stereo headset.
The BlackBerry Bold 9650 is equipped with a 3.2-megapixel camera which also works as a camcorder. The quality of photos we took with it was decent, but when we moved indoors, things got rather bad, because images looked washed out. Videos were ok.
Medium sound performance
The media player was able to work with WMA, AAC/AAC+, MP3, MPEG-4 and many more music formats and video codecs.
Is the performance of the Bold 9650 any good? The smartphone doesn’t offer stellar audio quality, but it’s nothing to cry over either; we could hear voices clearly and we were heard fairly well by others. Speakerphone also delivered decent sound performance, with volume and clarity being what impressed us the most.
So, since we are at the end of our review, we highly recommend the BlackBerry Bold 9650. Why: for its responsiveness, superb connection speed and over 6 hours of talk time.
