Asus Zenbook UX31
A new ultrabook available
This is the first time that Asus delves in the ultrabook domain by releasing the Zenbook UX31, a device aimed at those who admire a good-looking and well-built all-metal construction with all sorts of amazing tricks under its sleeve. The battery and processor are among the best ones we’ve seen on any other laptops we’ve tested so far. Many specialised sites named the device Editors’ Choice and promised to buy one as soon as possible. We tested the gadget and offer you this review. Hope it will help you decide if buying it is the best choice of your life or not.
All-metal monoshell body
More than once we remained positively awed at the quality of designs offered by Asus. The latest addition to their line of laptops, the Zenbook UX31, comes to prove that the experts behind the company didn’t forget how to make products that are pleasing to the eye of the beholder. The chassis boasts a spun finish and there are tight concentric circles radiating from the logo sitting on an aluminum lid. Asus is rivaling the construction of Apple laptops with their own all-metal monoshell body. The palm rest and the underside of the chassis have been merged, with the former having a vertical brushed pattern which we very much liked. The chassis and the display had no flexing. As for measurements, the device is 0.66″ x 12.79″ x 8.78″ and a weight similar to Apple’s MacBook Air.
Very solid design
This laptop proved to be more solid than others when we tested it in our lab.
In terms of display, the 13.3″ installed on this laptop has 1600 x 900 pixels when it comes to resolution and 450 nits of brightness, making it brighter than the screen on Samsung Series 9. And the viewing angles were more than fine, making watching movies a really nice experience when you’re with someone. The keyboard of Zenbook UX31 is chiclet-style and has the same tile layout as that on the MacBook Air, but, compared to that, it features an element which is highly luxurious and adorned with metal buttons which, albeit small in height, don’t come with backlight. A touchpad was also present and was covered in glass, which made it smooth to the touch. The touch surface was broad and supported multitouch gestures, much to our delight, and a clickpad; the bottom left and right corners worked as silent mouse buttons.
SSD hard drive
Now comes the part where we talk about features and specs. The Asus Zenbook UX31 has – besides 1 USB 2.0 and 1 USB 3.0 port, a mini VGA connection, SD/MMC card reader and other such connectivity options – a USB-to-Ethernet adapter, 1 mini VGA-to-VGA adapter, Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11n Wi-Fi. Apart from these, there’s a laptop sleeve which serves as protection.
The SSD drive contains 128GB and the company offers its users 2GB of free storage space for 12 months.
Intel Core i5-2557M processor
For security purposes the following are included: Asus Face Logon, Asus Secure Delete, recovery and automatic data backup and a 2-month Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security. Other software on board the laptop: Microsoft Office Starter 2010, multimedia library and games, Nuance PDF reader and more.
The battery offers 6 hours and a half of life.
Interested in the type of processor? The Zenbook UX31 ships with a 1.7 GHz Intel Core i5-2557M dual-core ultra low voltage along with 4GB of RAM which does a splendid job.
In conclusion, at the end of the review, the Asus Zenbook UX31 is an entry-level for the company in the ultrabook category, but it’s one of the best today.
