A nice 20 inch monitor from Asus
The Asus VH202T is viewed as one of the best monitors these days. The device is supposed to offer great quality at a very affordable price. Does it really perform that well? We tested it and here is what we have to say about the product.
Pretty solid design
First of all, let’s see how the Asus VH202T does in the design department. The device is a good-looking one and its body is made of high gloss black. The monitor is slick and measures 20″ x 17.5″ x 9.5″; it weighs 6kg. The stand of the VH202T looks pretty solid, so you don’t have to worry that it might break into a million pieces if you accidentally hit the desk it sits on. Moreover, the already mentioned stand sports a large round base; there are various keys which sit on the right edge. During our test for this review we encountered some problems when trying to push the said buttons, because they were rather stiff. The screen was very easy to tilt up and down.
Good panel response time
Below the screen there’s a LED power indicator; its color is a subdued blue which, when compared to those on other monitors, doesn’t take your eyes off the screen to spy on it. This indicator allowed five degrees down and 20 degrees up swivel; it didn’t include right or left rotation. The resolution offered by the VH202T panel is 1600 x 900 and the contrast ratio is 16:9; refresh rate is 60-75Hz and the digital contrast ratio is 18.000:1. The 16:9 was, when we tested the monitor for our review, perfect for watching movies and multitasking. We were pleased to see that the device had a 5ms response time; there were minimal tearing on high res games when the sync was turned off, very minimal tearing on high res when the sync was on and we noticed no ghosting whatsoever.
Splendid Video technology
After turning the monitor on, we had to adjust brightness and contrast down to 80% and 85% respectively, so as to avoid the blinding default settings. We also had to do some adjustments in the color temperature department so as to obtain good white reproduction. The Splendid Video technology boasted by the device’s manufacturers simply means that the device featured a dedicated video processor. Some interesting options are the five included presets, namely theater (the most interesting one of the bunch), scenery, night use, standard (the second most interesting one) and game. The monitor also provided buttons for adjusting things like volume, input mode and many more.
Good color saturation
We liked the fact that the Asus VH202T had no backlight bleeding and no dead pixels like other monitors out there. Scaling looked very good. There was no need to use the 4:3 mode in order to be able to play games or watch videos in the best of conditions. Full screen video at even 640 x 480 was watchable in 1600 x 900. Color saturation was very good.
In terms of viewing angle, the product will have to be adjusted so that you’ll look at it straight on, because otherwise you’ll experience darkening at the top.
In the sound department, the VH202T featured built-in speakers. They delivered 1 Watt of power which resulted into very poor audio quality.
The monitor ships with 1 DVI and 1 VGA with cables for both of them. It has a 3-year warranty. As a con, the user’s manual had very little helpful instructions.
All in all, the Asus VH202T is a nice monitor. However, if you want a superior one, you should look elsewhere.
