A new type of tablet PC

If you’re one who doesn’t like typing on a tablet screen, Asus recommends their Eee Pad Slider SL101. And the USB 2.0, miniHDMI and microSD are worthy additions which will make this device attractive; the price too is a very good one and the Honeycomb operating system means a lot of opportunities. There are also downsides when thinking about buying the Eee Pad Slider SL101; some of them are the following: considerable weight and the lack of a LED flash. These are the things we noticed when we started testing the product. For more insight on the matter, we invite you to read this review.

Interesting design

The front of this tablet is similar to any other tablet on the market today. Unlike those, however, the Asus Eee Pad Slider SL101 keeps all the goodies it sports underneath the body. On the top bezel edge is a 1.2-megapixel camera which faces the front of the gadgets above it there’s an arrow pointing up and on the side sits a groove. When we pulled the thing it made the product’s screen slide back and remain fixed at an angle of 45 degrees; the mechanism which made the display slide back didn’t wear during the many times we tested it, so you needn’t worry. When we looked under it, we saw a keyboard which worked very well. Asus-Eee-Pad-Slider-SL101

Very comfortable

The back of Asus SL101 has a rubbery part which made the device feel comfortable and prevented it from falling from our hands and we didn’t feel as if the edges would at any moment cut into our palms.
Now let’s see what this slider is made of: a bottom keyboard plate and a top tablet plate; while the first is pearl-colored, the second is a black chassis and bezel which have a silver edge on 3 of its sides. On its front half, the keyboard plate featured buttons which had light-gray text which we found easy to read; on the other half are placed many ventilation holes. A mic pinhole, a microSD card slot and the buttons for reset, volume and power sit comfortably on the left side and toward the rear.

5 megapixel camera

The right side has to do with a USB 2.0 slot and a headphone jack. The back edge is the part where a miniHDMI port and a 40-pin connector slot find themselves. Finishing up with this part is the bottom, where a 5-megapixel camera lens waits for you to use it.
Now the thing that bugged us was the typing. It felt cramped; therefore we don’t recommend this tablet to people who have larger hands. The spacebar also misbehaved: we simply missed it when typing, and it happened quite a lot. The button, though smallish, were accurate and comfortable to use when writing this review. We really had to get used to there being no touchpad in Asus SL101, but we eventually did, faster than we had previously expected.

Medium battery life

Now for the memory aspect: the Eee Pad Slider SL101 comes with 2 options, a 16GB and a 32GB one. The processor used here is a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 with 1GB of RAM. The tablet supports Bluetooth 1, 802.11n Wi-Fi; an ambient light sensor, memory expansion via microSD and others round the list of features. There’s one speaker that provides decent sound performance.
The camera which comes preinstalled took fairly good photos, but they lacked vibrancy and other things. Video battery life was almost 8 hours.

Review conclusion

To sum it up our test performed for this review, the latest Asus Eee Pad Slider SL101 might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but it’s still a fun to use gadget.
