Archos 101 G9

Archos-101-G9

A cheap Android tablet

Maybe creators of Archos 101 G9 should have waited a bit before releasing this device into the world to impress people. The things is, the tablet is certainly too large for its own good and the keys are placed at awkward angles; what is more, the camera doesn’t take good photos and the quality of its recording option is generally poor. The nice screen, kickstand and the fact that it can run 1080p videos in a way that is very smooth might save some of the first impressions resulted from our test. Read the following review and see for yourselves.

Interesting design

While made of a chassis which is made of medium-gray plastic, the 1.44pounds it weighs aren’t actually enough to make it heavy. Looking at the Archos 101 G9 after talking it from its box the pair of edges situated on its bottom design were enough to draw our attention; they were small and had the function of opening the chassis. Their main advantage is that they aren’t as ostentatious as the ones on Archos’ predecessor; their main disadvantage was that they visibly distracted us when the tablet sat in our hands. A volume button is featured close to the bottom of the tablet; the left part hosts a headphone jack, miniHDMI, MicroSD card port, the lock/reset key and a microUSB port. When we held the Archos G9 tablet in its landscape mode, we more than once accidentally locked the gadget or turned the volume down. Archos-101-G9

1280 x 800 pixel resolution

A webcam which is able to record 720p video is placed in the middle of the front right side and the rear comes with a kickstand; the latter was very useful when we watched our favorite movies. Above the speaker is a 3G stick slot which provides Internet access anywhere.
The placement of the buttons on the Archos 101 G9 is, to say the least, awkward. The screen has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and an MVA panel; the viewing angle was plenty wide, but the brightness is generally not that good.
The time has come to touch upon the subject of software, which boasts the option of calibrating the accelerometer and touchscreen, delete the device’s apps, delete all your songs/photos and many more.

1GHz Texas Instruments OMAP 4 processor

The Archos 101 G9 tablet tested by us included the full Android Market from where we could get the Archos remote control; this one made it easy to control the gadget from our phone and also to use it as a media player attached to our TV. As for hardware, this tablet here includes 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, gyroscope and Bluetooth 2.1 EDR, just to name some of the features. The processor is, interestingly enough, a 1GHz Texas Instruments OMAP 4 dual-core. The volume of the preinstalled speaker was, during our tests, pretty good; the problem was that when we placed the tablet down, the sound quality dropped, as the speaker was muffled. The operating system is Android 3.2.46; it sometimes had lags after we’d try to open an application and the tablet needed a few seconds to wake from the lock mode. The battery life was good.
The camera that faces the front of the product produced a playback which showed blurry videos and we definitely saw visual noises.

Review conclusion

At the end of this review we can conclude that the new Archos 101 G9 tablet has some pros and cons, but overall this is a tablet which should be used by beginners until they get enough used to such devices to buy better ones.
